Redband Coffee Roasters Takes Its Time, and It Shows

Redband Coffee Roasters sources and roasts all of its own beans on-site — which sounds like a given in bigger cities, but in Davenport it’s genuinely rare. Most coffee shops here are pulling from regional or national roasters and putting their name on it. Redband actually owns the process from green bean to cup, and once you know that, you start to taste the difference.

I started going there because a coworker wouldn’t stop talking about the Guatemala single-origin pour-over, and I’ll admit I was skeptical. A pour-over in the Quad Cities felt a little precious to me. But she was right, and I’ve been going back ever since — usually to the location on Harrison Street in the Village, though they also have a presence at a few local markets when they’re selling retail bags.

The space itself is comfortable without being designed to death. There’s exposed brick, some decent natural light, a few mismatched chairs that actually invite you to sit rather than hurry you along. They’re not trying to out-aesthetic anyone. The focus is clearly on what’s in the cup.

What I’d tell anyone going for the first time: ask whoever’s at the bar what came in recently. They rotate origins regularly — I’ve had Ethiopians, Colombians, a really memorable natural-processed Costa Rican — and the staff genuinely knows what they’re talking about without being the kind of insufferable about it that makes you feel dumb for ordering a latte. The lattes, by the way, are good. Balanced, not buried in syrup, actual coffee flavor coming through. They’ll do flavored drinks, but they don’t push them.

Cold brew is worth mentioning separately. They do a slow-steeped batch that’s available seasonally, and it’s one of the better ones I’ve had anywhere. Smooth and concentrated without the bitterness that hits you from most commercial cold brews. If it’s on the board when you’re there, get it.

Retail bags run somewhere in the $16–$20 range depending on the origin, which is fair for small-batch local roasting. Drinks are priced like a normal independent coffee shop — a few dollars more than a chain, a few dollars less than you’d pay in Chicago for the same quality. Worth it, clearly, or I wouldn’t keep going back.

They’re not open late, and they’re not trying to be a co-working hub or a cocktail bar at night. They do one thing — specialty coffee, roasted here, served well — and they’ve gotten very good at it. For a city that sometimes undersells what it has, Redband is one of those places that would hold its own in any market. The fact that it’s here, on a Tuesday morning when you just need a good cup and a place to sit for a while, makes it feel like exactly the right kind of find.
