Rapid City, SD – A husband and wife who live in the LaCrosse Estates Apartments on East Anamosa Street say they no longer feel safe after a rock broke their car’s front windshield last week.
Police officers knocked on the couple’s door early in the morning, asking what vehicle they drove. The officers confirmed that a rock had struck the windshield, leaving the residents with an unexpected repair bill.
Alleged cause and past safety
The couple said a new tenant moved into a nearby unit only 48 hours earlier. An argument allegedly erupted, and the new tenant allegedly grabbed an object that struck the windshield.
They recalled that, as recently as five years ago, LaCrosse Estates was a “great place to live.” The wife now says she is afraid to walk alone at night, and the husband added, “I really don’t like her walking alone at night or even during the day because of how unsafe I feel.”
Desire to relocate
Because of the incident, the couple wants to move as soon as possible, but they say they have been unable to find alternative housing.
They also expressed frustration with the complex’s owners, accusing them of using “misleading photos” in advertisements. “It doesn’t look like what we saw when we decided to come here, and it wasn’t even what we saw online when we came to sign the lease,” the wife said.
Crime context at LaCrosse Estates
Law enforcement classifies LaCrosse Estates and surrounding north‑Rapid City neighborhoods as violent‑crime hotspots. The Rapid City Police Department confirmed that the area receives a disproportionate number of calls for service compared with other apartment complexes in the city.
Police have noted three shootings at the complex in January and report that officers regularly return for high‑priority calls throughout the year. While the area remains a focus for law‑enforcement resources, officials say crime‑prevention efforts have been hampered by a lack of engagement and investment from property managers.
Management response
KOTA reached out to Tzadik Properties, the management company for LaCrosse Estates, for comment but has not yet received a response.
Residents of the complex and surrounding neighborhoods are encouraged to stay vigilant, report suspicious activity, and work with local law‑enforcement initiatives aimed at reducing violent crime.
