Randori Brewing Pours Something Honest in Millvale

What do you actually do on a Saturday afternoon in Millvale when you don’t want to drive far, stand in line, or pay twelve dollars for a cocktail someone named after a mountain range? I ended up at Randori Brewing Company on Grant Avenue, which turned out to be exactly the right answer.

Millvale sits just north of Pittsburgh proper, across the Allegheny from the Strip District. It’s a short drive or a quick ride over the 40th Street Bridge, and Grant Avenue itself has a low-key, unhurried feeling — the kind of block where a brewery fits naturally rather than feeling like a calculated investment in neighborhood cool. Randori’s space reflects that. It’s a working taproom: exposed ductwork, long communal tables, a small bar, tanks visible through the back. No effort to make it look like a movie set.

I got there around two on a Saturday, which is the right time to go. The crowd was manageable — a handful of regulars at the bar, a few couples at tables, someone’s dog sleeping near the door. The people working behind the bar knew their beers and didn’t perform enthusiasm about it, which I appreciated.

Randori rotates its taps frequently, so your exact options will differ from mine, but the throughline is traditional styles made carefully. When I visited, I started with their Czech-style pilsner, which was clean and dry the way a pilsner should be — not an afterthought between IPAs. I followed with a dry Irish stout that drank easy without the syrupy weight you sometimes get. Both were around six or seven dollars a pint, which is fair for beer this well made.

They also had a hazy IPA that several people at nearby tables were working through, and a seasonal farmhouse ale that was doing something interesting with wheat and low bitterness. I tried it; it was good. Not showy, just good. That’s kind of the point at Randori — these are beers built for drinking, not for rating on an app.

There’s food, though the kitchen keeps it simple: soft pretzels, some snacks, that kind of thing. If you’re hungry in a real way, eat before you come or grab something from one of the spots on the Ave. The beer is the thing here.

Millvale itself is worth spending more time in if you haven’t. McNally’s Candy store is a few minutes away. The riverfront trail runs right through. The neighborhood has a genuine working-class Pittsburgh character that’s starting to attract young businesses without losing that entirely, and Randori feels like part of the former more than the latter.

Randori is closed Mondays and Tuesdays. Wednesday through Friday they open in the late afternoon; weekends they start around noon. Parking is easy on the street. The taproom fills up by evening on weekends but rarely gets oppressively crowded. It’s the kind of place you can actually have a conversation.

I stayed two hours without meaning to, which is probably the most honest thing I can say about it.
