Providence teachers plan informational picket over school heating problems

The Providence Teachers Union announced it will stage an informational picket on Wednesday, November 4, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. outside the school district’s administration building on Westminster Street. The picket is intended to draw attention to ongoing heating problems affecting several city schools.

Schools experiencing cold classrooms

Union representatives say that Central High, Hope High, Nathanael Greene Middle School and George J. West Elementary have been forced to operate with inadequate heat. In some classrooms, temperatures have reportedly dropped to as low as 53 degrees Fahrenheit, making it difficult for students and staff to focus on learning.

Union’s concerns and district response

The union claims that district leaders have instructed teachers to keep space heaters running throughout the night until the fire marshal can be consulted. Union members argue that this approach is unsafe and does not address the underlying infrastructure issues.

District officials have not yet issued a detailed response to the union’s allegations. However, the administration has indicated that it is working with facilities staff and external contractors to assess the heating systems and develop a plan for repairs.

Why an informational picket?

Rather than a traditional strike, the union chose an informational picket to keep classrooms open while still raising public awareness. Organizers hope that parents, community members and local officials will see the picket and understand the urgency of fixing the heating systems before the winter months intensify.

“Our teachers and students deserve a safe, comfortable learning environment,” said a union spokesperson. “We are asking the district to act quickly and transparently so that every child can study in a warm classroom.”

Impact on students and families

Parents have expressed concern about the cold conditions, noting that younger children are especially vulnerable to low indoor temperatures. Some families have reported that children have complained of feeling chilly during lessons, which can affect concentration and overall academic performance.

Local community groups have offered to provide additional blankets and warm clothing for students in need while the district works on a long‑term solution.

Next steps

The picket will conclude at 5:00 p.m., after which union leaders plan to meet with district officials to discuss a timeline for repairs. The union has also indicated it will continue to monitor the situation and may organize further actions if heating problems persist.

Residents are encouraged to attend the picket to show support for teachers and students, and to voice their concerns directly to district administrators.
