President Trump Announces 15‑Month Renovation of East Potomac Golf Course

President Donald Trump announced Sunday that the East Potomac Golf Course, a 106‑year‑old public facility near the White House, will be closed for a 15‑month renovation beginning Nov. 15. In a social‑media post, the president pledged to transform the course into “one of the best and most spectacular golf courses anywhere in the world” while maintaining public access for future tournaments such as the U.S. Open, PGA Championship, Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup.

Administration’s Rationale

Trump framed the project as a necessary response to what he described as a “dilapidated” and “dangerous” course. He cited falling, disease‑infested trees, a collapsing seawall, and overgrown fairways that, in his view, render the links unsafe for golfers. The president argued that the renovation will not only restore the course’s historic character but also elevate it to a venue capable of hosting world‑class events, thereby boosting Washington’s tourism and recreation options for all residents.

Legal Challenge

The renovation plan faces a federal court order issued last week by U.S. District Judge Ana Reyes. The judge halted the redevelopment until at least Oct. 26, criticizing the government for cutting hundreds of trees over a holiday weekend without adequate notice to the court or the plaintiffs. The plaintiffs, represented by the nonprofit Democracy Forward, contend that the course is part of a national park meant for universal enjoyment and that the proposed changes could restrict access for ordinary Washingtonians.

Democracy Forward’s president and CEO, Skye Perryman, said, “Our litigation is intended to protect this community jewel for the people and communities it serves and we will continue to work with our plaintiffs to defend it from unlawful and harmful intrusion.” The organization emphasizes the course’s role as an affordable recreation space for residents of all income levels.

Broader Context of Trump’s Capital Projects

The East Potomac project is part of a larger series of renovation initiatives the Trump administration has pursued in Washington, D.C., including plans for a new ballroom at the White House, a renamed Kennedy Center, and a monumental arch. Many of these projects have encountered legal scrutiny, with opponents questioning the use of federal resources and the impact on historic sites.

Upcoming Court Proceedings

A hearing is scheduled for Monday in the lawsuit filed by the D.C. Preservation League and two local golfers. Judge Reyes has also been asked to step aside by the administration, which alleges “egregious” conduct by the judge during an emergency hearing on Oct. 12. The administration’s request for a new judge underscores the ongoing tension between the White House’s redevelopment agenda and judicial oversight.

At the upcoming hearing, the court will consider both the request to replace Judge Reyes and the plaintiffs’ motion for a longer preliminary injunction. The outcome will determine whether the renovation can proceed as planned or remain stalled pending further review.

What This Means for Washington Residents

If the renovation moves forward, the East Potomac Golf Course could become a premier destination for major golf tournaments, potentially drawing visitors and revenue to the capital. The administration maintains that the upgraded facility will remain open to the public, preserving its role as a community resource while enhancing its competitive stature.

Critics, however, warn that the changes may limit affordable access and alter the historic character of the park. The debate highlights a broader conversation about how federal projects balance national prestige with local community needs.
