Powder River Country Club Feeds Sheridan Quietly Well

The dining room at Powder River Country Club doesn’t advertise itself. It sits off West Fifth Street on the western edge of Sheridan, behind a golf course that locals treat more like a neighborhood park than a private retreat. The building is low and wide, the kind of 1970s-era clubhouse that smells faintly of grass clippings and coffee even in winter. And the food, by almost any reasonable expectation for a place like this, is better than it has any right to be.

The club opened its dining room to non-members some years back — a quiet policy shift that most Sheridanites either don’t know about or haven’t bothered to act on. That ambivalence is their loss. Walk in on a Friday evening and the room runs at about two-thirds capacity: retired couples, families celebrating something modest, a table of golfers who finished nine holes and stayed for dinner. The mood is unhurried without being sleepy.

The menu sticks to what people around here actually want to eat: prime rib on weekends, a rotating soup that’s often a proper cream-based chowder rather than something from a commercial pouch, a Caesar that gets dressed tableside when the kitchen isn’t slammed. The steaks are cut thick and cooked to order without drama. Nothing on the plate signals ambition, which is exactly the point — the kitchen isn’t performing, it’s feeding people.

Friday night prime rib runs around $28–$34 depending on cut, and it comes with a salad, potato, and bread that arrives warm. The weekend brunch, available on Sundays from roughly 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., is where the value proposition gets almost absurd: eggs cooked to order, a carved meat station, pastries, fruit, and a modest but functional omelet bar for somewhere in the range of $18–$20 per person. Families drift in after church. Kids fill plates three times without anyone blinking.

The bar is short and unpretentious. Wyoming whiskeys appear alongside the usual well spirits, and the bartender — who has worked there long enough to remember when the dining room was members-only — pours without fussing over garnishes. A glass of house red with dinner costs what a glass of house red should cost.

What makes Powder River worth the detour isn’t any single dish. It’s the texture of the place: the way the light falls across the dining room in late afternoon, golden and horizontal; the fact that the staff actually know the regulars; the absence of noise or hustle or the low-grade anxiety that comes with restaurants trying too hard. Sheridan has plenty of spots where the food makes the news. This is the kind of place that just keeps showing up, year after year, doing exactly what it set out to do.

Reservations are worth a call on Friday and Saturday evenings, especially in summer when the golf calendar fills the parking lot early. The Sunday brunch doesn’t require advance planning, but arriving closer to opening than to close means better odds on the carved meats before they run short.
