Philadelphia leaders denounce planned bike‑ride boycott of Jewish businesses as antisemitic

Philadelphia officials on Sunday united in a strong rebuke of a planned bicycle “boycott ride” that would target Jewish‑owned restaurants in the city’s historic Rittenhouse Square neighborhood. The ride, organized by the group Philly Bike On Your Left, is slated for Sunday, the eve of the 88th anniversary of Kristallnacht, a night of Nazi‑orchestrated violence against Jews.

State and city leaders call the protest antisemitic

Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday described the timing and focus of the ride as “deeply unsettling,” noting that singling out businesses because their owners are Jewish is a form of hate that has no place in the Commonwealth. Governor Josh Shapiro’s office echoed the sentiment, labeling the event “blatant antisemitism designed to intimidate and drive Jewish businesses out of our communities.” The governor’s statement added that the Pennsylvania State Police are working with local partners to protect residents and ensure safety during the demonstration.

Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker affirmed the city’s commitment to peaceful protest while condemning the targeting of businesses based on religion. “Everyone has the right to protest peacefully, but singling out businesses because their owners are Jewish is unacceptable and has no place in our city,” Parker wrote on social media.

Organizer’s rationale and response

The group behind the ride, Philly Bike On Your Left, describes itself as an “anti‑Zionist” cycling page that opposes racism, oppression, fascism, antisemitism, Islamophobia and colonialism. In a statement to CNN and posted on Instagram, the organizers insisted the boycott is motivated by the businesses’ support for Israel, not by hatred toward Jews. They also claimed the timing of the ride is unrelated to the Kristallnacht anniversary, calling any criticism of the date “false.”

Despite the backlash, the group said it will proceed with the ride, promising to flag as many bicycles as possible and to show “solidarity with the Palestinian community and oppressed folks everywhere.” The organizers posted a rallying message urging participants to “show these Zionist business owners that we see them for the disgusting humans they are.”

Community and advocacy reactions

The Anti‑Defamation League’s CEO Jonathan Greenblatt called the planned protest “absolutely vile,” describing it as “antisemitism disguised as activism.” He warned that such actions threaten the safety and dignity of Jewish residents and businesses.

Local Jewish leaders also urged caution. Rabbi Jill Maderer of Congregation Rodeph Shalom advised congregants to avoid the Rittenhouse crowds and instead attend a Kristallnacht commemoration at the Horwitz‑Wasserman Holocaust Memorial Plaza. She emphasized the need to respond without giving the antisemites the attention they crave, while supporting peace for the targeted businesses.

Historical context of protests

Philadelphia has seen similar demonstrations in recent years. In 2023, a separate group gathered outside Goldie, a falafel shop co‑owned by Israeli‑born chef Michael Solomonov, demanding an end to the Gaza siege and U.S. support for Israel. That protest also drew condemnation from the Biden administration and Pennsylvania officials.

CookNSolo Restaurants, which operates several venues in the area, declined comment on the upcoming ride.

Law enforcement preparedness

The Philadelphia Police Department confirmed officers will be on hand to maintain safety and order during the ride. The department warned that any threats, intimidation or unlawful conduct will be met with accountability.

Overall, state and city leaders stressed that while peaceful expression is a protected right, targeting businesses because of the owners’ faith crosses the line into hate. Their unified response underscores a commitment to protect both free speech and the safety of all Philadelphians, especially those of the Jewish faith.
