There is a place about forty minutes southwest of Jonesboro where the modern world simply stops. No notifications, no traffic, no noise beyond the splash of a paddle and the resonant call of a great blue heron lifting off the water. That place is Wapanocca National Wildlife Refuge, and if you have not yet made the drive out to Turrell, Arkansas, you are overdue for one of the most quietly spectacular natural experiences the Delta has to offer.
Wapanocca sits in Crittenden County along the western edge of the Mississippi Alluvial Plain, a landscape shaped over millennia by the slow, powerful work of the river. The refuge covers roughly 5,500 acres of bottomland hardwoods, croplands managed for migrating waterfowl, and — most remarkably — a stunning 900-acre natural lake at its heart. Wapanocca Lake is one of the few remaining natural oxbow lakes in Arkansas that has not been dramatically altered by agriculture or development, and the moment you catch your first glimpse of it through the tree line, you understand exactly why it earned federal protection.
The best way to experience Wapanocca is by canoe or kayak on the lake itself. The water is calm, tea-dark with tannins from the surrounding cypress and tupelo, and absolutely alive. During the spring and fall migration seasons, the skies above the refuge fill with ducks, geese, and shorebirds in numbers that feel almost impossible. Birders make pilgrimages here from across the mid-South specifically for the wintering waterfowl — at peak migration, tens of thousands of ducks have been documented using the lake in a single day. Even in summer, the birding is exceptional, with wood ducks, prothonotary warblers, and osprey reliably present.
You do not have to be a birder to love this place. The refuge has a well-maintained auto tour route that winds through the property, making it genuinely accessible for families, older visitors, or anyone who simply wants to roll down the windows and let the landscape wash over them. The gravel road meanders past flooded fields, hardwood stands full of deer, and viewing pullouts positioned perfectly for watching wildlife at the lake’s edge.
Pack a lunch and plan to linger. There are picnic tables near the refuge entrance, and the pace of life out here practically demands that you slow down and eat deliberately, watching the treeline rather than your phone. The refuge is managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and is open to the public during daylight hours, free of charge.
From Jonesboro, the drive follows Highway 63 south toward West Memphis before turning toward Turrell — it is a straightforward trip through classic Delta scenery that is itself worth the outing. Give yourself at least three hours, more if you are bringing a kayak or a camera with a long lens.
Wapanocca is the kind of place that recalibrates something in you. The scale of the sky over the Delta, the hush of cypress water, the improbable abundance of wild things living their lives just off the highway — it puts everything back in proportion. Jonesboro is a wonderful home base for exploring the Arkansas Delta, and Wapanocca is one of the finest reasons to venture out from it.
