Salem, Oregon – This October, the Oregon Employment Department is celebrating National Disability Employment Awareness Month with a focus on the theme “Celebrating Value and Talent.” The agency is using the month to spotlight the vital contributions of Oregonians with disabilities to the state’s workforce and to promote the free services offered by WorkSource Oregon.
WorkSource Oregon’s statewide reach
WorkSource Oregon, a partnership that includes the department’s Workforce Operations division, operates 37 centers across the state. The network provides free employment services for job seekers with disabilities while helping local businesses recruit and retain skilled workers.
Personalized support for job seekers
Individuals can meet one‑on‑one with WorkSource staff to set career goals, develop job‑search plans, and receive assistance with resumes, applications and interview preparation. The centers also offer access to career exploration, training and workplace resources designed to help people with disabilities succeed.
Leadership emphasizes community benefit
Andrew R. Stolfi, director of the Oregon Employment Department, said, “Oregon’s workforce is stronger when people have opportunities to use their skills, build careers and contribute to their communities. We’re honored to help job seekers with disabilities connect with opportunities to thrive in the workplace and with partner agencies for added support.”
Collaboration with state partners
The statewide system works closely with specialized programs, including the Oregon Department of Human Services’ Vocational Rehabilitation program, which removes barriers to employment, and the Oregon Commission for the Blind, which provides skills training, job‑search assistance and workplace support for eligible blind Oregonians.
Assisting employers
Jim Pfarrer, director of Workforce Operations, explained, “Every job seeker brings different skills, experiences and goals to their job search. We help job seekers with disabilities explore career opportunities, prepare for employment and connect with employers. We also work with our partners to make sure people can access the services and support they need to succeed.” WorkSource Oregon assists businesses in improving recruitment, hiring and retention practices to expand opportunities for workers with disabilities.
Accessible services for all
All centers provide free accommodations, including sign‑language and spoken‑language interpreters, as well as materials in audio, large print and other formats. Service locations and resources are listed online at WorkSourceOregon.org or can be accessed by calling 503‑947‑1680.
By highlighting the value and talent of Oregonians with disabilities, the department hopes to encourage both job seekers and employers to recognize the benefits of an inclusive workforce throughout the state.
