Ope, There’s a Line. Taco Lover’s Dream at Taqueria Los Arcos

Around 11:45 on a Tuesday, a line has already formed at the counter inside Taqueria Los Arcos on South Broadway. This is not a surprise to anyone who has eaten here before. It is, however, a mild inconvenience that is very much worth accepting.

Los Arcos occupies the kind of strip-mall space that makes zero architectural promises. Fluorescent lighting, laminate tables, a wall menu in Spanish and English, and a steam table of braised meats that smells like someone’s abuela started cooking before sunrise — because, essentially, someone did. The place has been feeding Rochester’s Latin community and a growing number of people who have simply figured out where to eat for years now, doing so without any apparent interest in atmosphere or Instagram angles.

The taco is the thing. Order two or three — corn tortillas, double-stacked the way they should be, with your choice of meat and a scatter of raw white onion and cilantro. The al pastor is properly caramelized at the edges, not the steamed-from-a-bag version you get at lesser establishments. Carnitas hold together without being greasy. Barbacoa is rich and a little funky in the best possible sense. Each taco runs around two-fifty to three dollars, which means you can eat extremely well for under ten bucks, a fact that Rochester, with its abundance of fourteen-dollar salads, does not fully appreciate.

If you want something more substantial, the tortas are legitimately good — a sturdy telera roll filled with your chosen protein, avocado, jalapeño, and enough other stuff that it takes some structural planning to eat. The menudo on weekends is the kind of thing that either makes you very happy or makes you very aware that you did not grow up eating tripe. No judgment either way, but worth knowing before you order.

The agua fresca changes, so just ask what’s available. Horchata is usually on hand and is the right call on a warm afternoon. Skip the can of soda and drink the horchata.

Service is quick and matter-of-fact in the way that suggests the staff is more interested in getting food to you than in performing hospitality. This is fine. Preferred, actually. You order at the counter, get a number, find a table, and the food arrives fast enough that you haven’t finished scrolling through your phone before it shows up.

Lunch is the busiest stretch — the line at noon can push out toward the door on weekdays when the nearby medical and construction workers figure out their options. Go at 11:30 or after 1:00 if you want to sit immediately. Dinner is quieter. Weekend mornings, if you’re curious about the menudo situation, are their own separate experience.

South Broadway has a cluster of Latin restaurants and markets that don’t get nearly enough coverage in the usual Rochester food conversation, which tends to orbit downtown and the Mayo Clinic vicinity. Los Arcos is probably the best argument for driving six minutes south and eating like a person with good sense. It is not glamorous. It does not need to be. The al pastor does the work.
