SYRACUSE, N.Y. — As Halloween approaches, the Onondaga County Public Library is once again providing a valuable community service for families seeking affordable costumes. The library’s free “Costume Closet” opened its doors this season at the White Branch Library, allowing residents to select costumes at no cost.
Why the Costume Closet matters for families
“Costumes are expensive,” said Jackie Bleich, manager of the library’s program. “This is an opportunity for families to take the stress out of Halloween costume shopping. They can have a stress‑free time to let kids pick costumes out for themselves, but it also allows Syracuse residents to donate their costumes they’ve been holding on to.”
The initiative aligns with the library’s broader mission to support families and strengthen community ties. By offering a no‑cost option, the library helps parents stretch their budgets while encouraging the reuse of gently used garments, a practice that also benefits the environment.
Upcoming pop‑up events
To reach more neighborhoods, the library has scheduled two additional Costume Closet events. The first will take place on October 17 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Betts Branch, and the second on October 24 from noon to 4 p.m. at the Mundy Branch. Both events will remain open for as long as costumes are available.
Parents are encouraged to arrive early, as popular sizes and themes tend to be selected quickly. Library staff will be on hand to assist children in trying on outfits and to answer any questions about the program.
How to get involved
In addition to borrowing costumes, community members can contribute by donating gently used outfits they no longer need. Donations can be dropped off at any participating branch during regular hours. The library emphasizes that all items should be clean and in good condition.
Local businesses have also expressed support for the program, offering to sponsor future events and provide additional storage space for donated items. This partnership underscores the shared commitment of civic institutions and private enterprises to support families during the holiday season.
Looking ahead
The library plans to evaluate the success of the Costume Closet after Halloween and consider expanding the program to include other seasonal needs, such as winter coats and school supplies. By listening to community feedback, the library hopes to continue offering practical resources that enhance the quality of life for Onondaga County residents.
Halloween falls on Saturday, October 31, giving families ample time to prepare with the help of the library’s free costume service. For more information, visit the Onondaga County Public Library website or contact the White Branch directly.
