Huntingburg, Indiana – A tragic traffic collision on Monday afternoon left one person dead and another seriously injured. The Huntingburg Police Department responded to the intersection of Main Street and 19th Street at approximately 3:30 p.m. after receiving reports of a multi‑vehicle crash.
Collision details
According to police, a northbound pickup truck operated by a 47‑year‑old Huntingburg man entered the intersection and collided with an eastbound pickup driven by Charles Blessing, 88, of Jasper. Investigators determined that Blessing failed to yield the right‑of‑way when he entered the intersection from 19th Street.
The impact caused Blessing’s truck to overturn, landing on its driver’s side down an embankment. The Huntingburg‑registered pickup also traveled down the embankment and breached a fence at the Hopf Equipment property.
Emergency response
Deaconess Memorial Urgent Care staff arrived quickly to provide medical assistance to both drivers while emergency personnel were en route. The Huntingburg Fire Department worked to extricate Blessing from the overturned vehicle.
Both drivers sustained serious injuries and were transported by ambulance to a hospital in Jasper for further treatment. While the Huntingburg driver remained hospitalized, Charles Blessing later succumbed to his injuries at the Jasper hospital.
Investigation and community impact
Police have not released additional details about the cause of the crash beyond the failure to yield finding. No other vehicles were reported to be involved, and there were no witnesses cited in the initial report.
The incident underscores the importance of obeying traffic signals and yielding when required, especially at busy intersections like Main and 19th Streets. Local officials encourage drivers to exercise caution and remain attentive to road conditions.
Resources for affected families
Residents seeking support for grief counseling or assistance with medical expenses are encouraged to contact local community services, including the Huntingburg Community Center and the Jasper County Health Department.
The Huntingburg Police Department will continue its investigation and may release further information as it becomes available.
