Olive Branch voters face hours-long lines amid equipment glitches

Olive Branch, Miss. – Voters at the Seventh‑day Adventist Church polling site endured unprecedented wait times on Tuesday, with some standing in line for several hours before finally receiving a ballot. The congestion was driven by a surge in turnout and reported issues with voting equipment.

Extended queues and indoor overflow

Throughout the day, the line wrapped around the church building. Intermittent rain pushed many voters inside around 5 p.m., but the indoor space quickly filled, prompting a new overflow line to form outside. One voter noted that the line seemed to move faster once people were sheltered indoors.

Equipment shortages compound delays

Long‑time voter Sharon Kotcki, who has cast ballots at the church for 15 years, described the equipment problems. Initially, poll workers told voters that no voting machines were available. Later, officials announced that paper ballots had run out, prompting the arrival of additional machines. By the end of the day, the site operated three machines, a stark contrast to the typical setup.

Kotcki recalled that the only other election with comparable lines was the 2020 presidential contest.

Community reaction to the turnout

David and Sondra Blackburn, who have voted at the location for 37 years, expressed surprise at the turnout, noting that midterm elections usually see only three or four cars in the parking lot. Despite the long waits and changing weather, voters remained determined to cast their votes.

“It was a long wait, but it was worth it,” said Kory Terry, who voted to see change for himself and fellow residents across the county and state.

Broader election context

The heavy turnout comes as Mississippi voters decide a closely watched U.S. Senate race between incumbent Republican Cindy Hyde‑Smith and Democratic challenger Scott Colom. While the DeSoto County Election Commission and the Mississippi Secretary of State’s Office have not yet responded to inquiries about the equipment issues, the situation highlights the challenges of managing high voter participation in local precincts.

What voters can expect

Officials encourage voters to arrive early, bring identification, and be prepared for possible delays during high‑turnout elections. The experience in Olive Branch underscores the importance of adequate polling resources to ensure that every citizen can exercise their constitutional right to vote without undue hardship.
