Okmulgee County Consortium and OSUIT Offer Free Medication and Sharps Take‑Back Event

Okmulgee County, Oklahoma – Residents gathered on Wednesday for a free Medication and Sharps Take‑Back Event organized by the Okmulgee County Consortium and the Oklahoma State University Institute of Technology (OSUIT). The event gave community members a safe, anonymous way to dispose of unused or expired prescription drugs and medical sharps such as lancets and needles.

Expanded Services Include Sharps Disposal

In recent years the consortium has held two drug take‑back events each year, but this session marked the first time sharps were collected on‑site. The new capability was made possible after the group secured grant funding to partner with a specialized disposal company. “Medical sharps are lancets, needles,” explained Larissa Warden, grant coordinator for the OSU Department of Wellness. “A lot of folks are unable to dispose of them properly. In the community, there’s not a lot of places to dispose of sharps, so we’re really fortunate to be able to provide this service to our community.”

Mail‑Back Containers for Ongoing Safety

To extend the impact beyond the event, the consortium also announced a partnership with a local pharmacy to provide residents with mail‑back containers. These containers allow individuals to safely store used sharps at home and send them to the disposal partner at any time, ensuring continuous protection against accidental injuries and environmental contamination.

Why Take‑Back Events Matter

Improper disposal of medications can lead to water‑supply contamination and accidental ingestion by children or pets. Unused prescription drugs also pose a risk of diversion for non‑medical use. By offering a secure drop‑off location, the consortium helps protect public health and supports responsible medication management.

Community Participation and Support

The event was held at the Okmulgee County Consortium’s main office, with volunteers from OSUIT, local health agencies, and the pharmacy partner assisting attendees. Participants received informational brochures on safe medication storage, proper disposal methods, and the benefits of using the new mail‑back containers.

Looking Ahead

Organizers plan to continue the semi‑annual take‑back schedule, expanding outreach to schools, senior centers, and faith‑based organizations throughout Okmulgee County. The goal is to make safe disposal a routine part of community health practices, reinforcing the county’s commitment to protecting families and preserving the environment.

For more information about upcoming take‑back events or to request a mail‑back container, residents can contact the Okmulgee County Consortium at (918) 555‑0123 or visit their website.
