Oklahoma veterans receive free Meta AI glasses to restore independence

On Thursday, blind and low‑vision veterans gathered at NewView Oklahoma in Oklahoma City to receive a new tool for daily life: free Meta AI‑powered smart glasses. The devices, designed to read mail, describe surroundings and answer spoken questions, aim to restore independence for those who have served the nation.

How the glasses work

The glasses use artificial‑intelligence vision to translate visual information into spoken words. A veteran demonstrated the feature by asking, “Hey Meta, what am I looking at?” The device replied, “You’re looking at a person holding a professional camera.” Other functions include reading printed text, identifying objects and providing navigation cues.

Veterans’ reactions

“I was apprehensive about the AI part because I’m an old fart. I’m old school,” said one veteran, smiling as he tried the glasses for the first time. Another, Kirk Crabtree, a U.S. Air Force veteran, called the giveaway “a great opportunity” and expressed excitement about the technology’s potential to improve daily tasks.

Training and support

Beyond the donation, each veteran received hands‑on training to learn how to phrase prompts and ask specific questions. “Just got to know the prompt by saying it correctly and then ask a specific question to understand it better. I think I like it,” one participant noted after a brief tutorial.

Meta’s commitment

Organizers reported that Meta has pledged to donate 130,000 AI glasses to blind veterans nationwide, extending the impact far beyond Oklahoma. The partnership with NewView Oklahoma reflects a broader effort to leverage cutting‑edge technology for the nation’s service members.

Why it matters for the community

Vision loss can isolate veterans, limiting their ability to manage mail, read prescriptions or navigate familiar environments. By providing a tool that translates visual data into audible information, the glasses help veterans maintain autonomy, stay connected with family and participate more fully in community life.

Looking ahead

Local advocates see this initiative as a model for future collaborations between tech companies and veteran services. As more veterans gain access to AI‑assisted devices, the hope is that similar programs will expand to address other disabilities and support the broader veteran population across the state.

For veterans interested in receiving the glasses or learning more about the program, NewView Oklahoma encourages contacting their office for eligibility details and upcoming training sessions.
