Prospective students from across Oklahoma are being given a unique opportunity to walk a day in the shoes of a music major at Northeastern State University (NSU) in Tahlequah. The university’s Music Major for a Day event is scheduled for Saturday, November 9, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the Fine Arts building.
What the day includes
Registered high‑school juniors and seniors will be able to sit in on actual music courses, receive one‑on‑one instruction from NSU faculty, and rehearse with the university’s ensembles. In addition to the musical immersion, the program offers a campus tour, a session on financial‑aid options, and information about career pathways for music graduates.
University leaders emphasize the value of early exposure
“We want students to have the opportunity to experience NSU for themselves, connect with our faculty and see how their interest can shape their future,” said NSU President Rodney Hanley. Assistant Professor of Music Dr. Alison Moore added, “Our goal is to give students a firsthand look at what pursuing a music degree at NSU could look like. Sometimes, pursuing a music degree can feel a little mysterious if you’re not sure what to expect. We want to open our doors, share what we do here and help students see the possibilities available to them at NSU.”
How to register
The event is free, but registration is required. Interested students and their families can sign up through the NSU website. A second session of the program is planned for February 4, 2027, offering another chance for students who cannot attend the fall date.
Why this matters for families and the community
For families who value strong educational foundations rooted in faith and tradition, the Music Major for a Day event provides a safe, supportive environment where young people can explore their talents without pressure. The hands‑on experience helps students make informed decisions about college majors, potentially saving time and money by confirming their interest before committing to a four‑year program.
Local high schools have welcomed the partnership, noting that early exposure to college‑level instruction can boost confidence and academic ambition. The event also aligns with broader community goals of nurturing the arts, preserving cultural heritage, and creating pathways to rewarding careers in music performance, education, and production.
Looking ahead
NSU hopes the Music Major for a Day program will become an annual tradition, expanding to include additional disciplines and outreach to neighboring school districts. By inviting prospective students into the campus environment, the university aims to strengthen its pipeline of talented musicians and reinforce its role as a cultural hub for eastern Oklahoma.
