East Las Vegas residents have gained a much‑needed shortcut after the opening of a new bridge and widened sidewalks on Sloan Lane. The project, completed on Oct. 23, was highlighted by Clark County Commissioner Tick Segerblom, who noted that the funding came from the county’s gas‑tax revenue and that additional road improvements are slated for the east side in the coming years.
Residents notice quicker trips
Travis Lang, a longtime east‑side resident, said the bridge has already made a noticeable difference for cyclists and drivers alike. “It’s way faster to cut through this way than head down Nellis and wait,” he explained. Lang added that the new route lets him avoid several traffic lights on Nellis Boulevard, cutting travel time to the nearby store.
Lang also praised the wider sidewalks, calling them an important upgrade for pedestrians, cyclists, and families with children. “Wider sidewalks for the bikers and for the people that’s walking. Room for everybody that’s on the sidewalk. So that’s definitely an improvement,” he said.
Commutes become smoother for families
Another resident, who asked to be identified only by her first name, Jenny, echoed Lang’s sentiment. She said the bridge has reduced her commute time when leaving the neighborhood. “I think it’s just been good that it’s opened up more because we go that way. Avoid some of Nellis’ traffic,” she said.
Jenny also cautioned drivers to respect the new route through residential streets. “Some cars go slow through the neighborhood and some fly by, so sometimes you just gotta slow down,” she advised.
County investment continues
Commissioner Segerblom confirmed that the bridge was financed through the county’s gas‑tax program, a reliable source for transportation projects. He indicated that the east side of Las Vegas will see further upgrades, noting the community’s need for more infrastructure improvements.
Lang welcomed the prospect of continued investment. “It’s the east side of Las Vegas, so it definitely needs more of an upgrade and things to be improved. So the improvements are good, and I know more is coming,” he said.
What the project means for the community
The new bridge and sidewalks address long‑standing concerns about limited travel options in the Sloan Lane area. By providing a direct crossing and safer pedestrian pathways, the project supports families, encourages active transportation, and eases congestion on nearby arterial roads. Local officials and residents alike view the development as a positive step toward a more connected and livable east Las Vegas.
