Neighbors rally to renovate home for Springfield veteran Eddie Lightner

Springfield residents are banding together to help a local hero. Eddie Lightner, who served 15 months in Iraq in 2004 and earned a Purple Heart after being wounded, is receiving a much‑needed home makeover thanks to neighbors, volunteers and a small local contractor.

Community effort sparked by need

Lightner and his wife approached Dream Big Contract, a Springfield‑based construction firm, after realizing their home no longer met the accessibility requirements needed for Eddie’s injuries. While Dream Big Contract does not normally offer veteran discounts, the company launched a donation drive that quickly gathered the resources needed to begin the project.

Renovations that restore independence

The renovation plan focuses on two key upgrades: a walk‑in shower designed for safe, independent bathing, and a new porch that provides easier entry to the house. Both improvements are intended to reduce the daily challenges Eddie faces because of his service‑related injuries.

“I just think, obviously, somebody who served our country got wounded doing so to the point where they obviously need some help; I just saw a need,” said Noah Sebastinas, owner of Dream Big Contract. “Whenever needs pop up and we’re able to help out, we try to.”

Neighbors pitch in

Local volunteers have been on‑site assisting with demolition, painting, and landscaping. Their contributions range from providing meals for the crew to donating materials such as tiles and lumber. The community’s response underscores Springfield’s tradition of caring for its veterans and supporting families in need.

“Seeing a veteran in our town get the help he deserves feels right,” said longtime resident Maria Torres, who has been coordinating food donations for the workers. “It’s a small way we can give back for the sacrifices made for our freedom.”

Impact beyond the home

Beyond the physical upgrades, the project has brought renewed hope to the Lightner family. Eddie, now 22 years removed from his deployment, said the renovations will greatly improve his quality of life and allow him to maintain independence.

“It’s more than just a porch or a shower,” Eddie said. “It’s a reminder that our community still stands with us, even after all these years.”

How to support similar efforts

Dream Big Contract encourages other local businesses and residents to consider similar initiatives for veterans and families facing hardship. The company plans to continue its community outreach program, seeking partnerships with churches, civic groups and local charities to identify additional needs.

For those interested in contributing to future projects, Dream Big Contract can be reached through its website or by contacting the Springfield Chamber of Commerce.
