Good Monday morning, East Tennessee! Today marks National Tennessee Day, a perfect occasion to honor the people, places and traditions that make our corner of the Volunteer State special.
Historical Roots
On Oct. 26, 1799, the Tennessee General Assembly created three of the state’s early counties—Smith, Williamson and Wilson. These counties were formed during a period of rapid settlement, just three years after Tennessee entered the Union as the nation’s 16th state.
Geography and Trivia
Tennessee shares its borders with eight other states: Kentucky, Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas and Missouri. Only Missouri also borders eight states, making our region uniquely connected.
In East Tennessee, “just down the road” can mean a five‑minute drive or a journey across a mountain, reminding us of the area’s rugged charm.
Today’s Celebrations
Oct. 26 is recognized for several observances:
- National Tennessee Day
- National Pumpkin Day
- National Mule Day
- National Day of the Deployed
- National Chicken Fried Steak Day
It’s an invitation to enjoy a pumpkin, appreciate our mules, honor deployed service members and perhaps savor a plate of chicken‑fried steak.
Weather Outlook
Knoxville should start the day near 40 °F, warming to around 72 °F under clear skies. The pleasant weather makes for an ideal afternoon walk, outdoor lunch or scenic fall drive.
Community Resources
Visit Knoxville maintains a frequently updated calendar of concerts, festivals, exhibits, family activities and community events. Planning a day or weekend around town? Check the calendar at Visit Knoxville events for the latest listings.
Early Voting Reminder
Early voting continues through Thursday, Oct. 29. Voters should verify their polling locations and hours with their county election commission before heading to the polls.
Flood Recovery in Four Corners
Communities in the Four Corners region are still recovering from recent destructive flooding. Local officials and relief organizations are assessing damage and assisting residents affected by the high water.
Global Perspective
While we celebrate locally, food shortages remain a critical concern in Gaza as aid organizations work to reach families facing hunger and displacement.
