Mya’s Soul Food Isn’t the Only Reason to Eat on 3500 South

What do you order when nothing on the menu looks familiar? That’s the question most first-timers ask themselves standing at the counter of Hala Kahiki Hawaiian BBQ, a plate lunch spot on the west side that doesn’t do much advertising and doesn’t need to. The regulars take care of that.

Tony, who’s worked the counter here long enough that he can tell a first-timer from a regular by how long they stare at the menu board, has a standard answer: start with the katsu. Chicken katsu, specifically — a thick cutlet breaded and fried until the crust shatters, served over two scoops of white rice and a scoop of mac salad with enough mayo to make a nutritionist wince. It’s the plate that converts people. Tony says maybe one in four who order it the first time come back within a week.

Hawaiian plate lunch culture is its own thing, and Hala Kahiki does it straight. The portions are generous in a way that feels almost confrontational — the kind of meal where you’re making decisions about what to save for later before you’ve finished half. The two-scoop-rice format is non-negotiable, a staple of Hawaiian fast-casual that the restaurant holds onto even when customers ask for substitutions. Some traditions aren’t up for debate.

Beyond the katsu, the kalua pork is the other anchor of the menu. Slow-cooked until it falls apart, slightly smoky, served simply without a lot of sauce fuss. It pairs well with the macaroni salad, which is creamy and cold in a way that cuts through the richness of the pork. The loco moco — rice, hamburger patty, fried egg, brown gravy — is what you order if you want to understand why Hawaii has a obesity problem and doesn’t seem particularly apologetic about it. It’s heavy, satisfying, and tastes exactly like it looks.

The room itself is small and functional. A few tables, nothing elaborate, the kind of fluorescent lighting that makes no promises about ambiance. You’re not here for the decor. You’re here because West Valley City has pockets of genuine regional food culture that most of Salt Lake County doesn’t bother to seek out, and this is one of them.

Prices are reasonable — most plates land in the $10–$14 range, which for the volume of food you receive feels like a fair exchange. It’s a cash-and-card place, quick service, no reservations needed. Lunch is the peak window; go between noon and 1:30 on a weekday and you’ll see the full cross-section of the neighborhood — construction crews, office workers making the drive from elsewhere, and families who’ve been coming here since the kids were small.

Tony will tell you, if you ask, that the mac salad recipe hasn’t changed. That’s not a selling point he volunteers — it just comes up when people ask. In a city that keeps changing around it, that kind of consistency is quietly worth something.
