Millersburg, Ky. – While Halloween still looms on the calendar, the small town of Millersburg is already in full Christmas mode. Mustard Seed Hill, the beloved Bourbon County event venue, has begun decking the halls of the historic Allen House, turning the property into a sparkling winter wonderland that promises to draw thousands of visitors.
Holiday magic for a town of 700
“When they see it they’re like, ‘this is a Hallmark movie, this is like Disney for Christmas,’” said Victoria Benson, president of Mustard Seed Hill. The venue’s transformation includes more than one million twinkling lights strung across the grounds, hand‑hung wreaths, and meticulously placed ornaments that give the entire property a festive glow.
Decorator Jonathan Furnish, who personally hangs each wreath and ornament, estimates that the house alone contains “hundreds, probably over 500” decorations. The attention to detail extends inside the Allen House, where every corner reflects the spirit of the season.
Economic engine for the community
Benson emphasized that Mustard Seed Hill is more than a holiday attraction; it serves as an economic engine for Millersburg. “Our big goal in Millersburg is to act as an economic engine as we help revitalize the town through Community Ventures, our parent company,” she explained. The venue’s success is especially significant after a devastating fire in June 2022 that destroyed several historic downtown buildings, including businesses, apartments, and the post office.
Since that dark moment, new ventures have emerged, and Mustard Seed Hill now brings “over 80,000 people to Millersburg every year, which is great for a town of 700,” Benson noted. The influx of tourists supports local restaurants, shops, and lodging providers, helping the town recover and thrive.
Beyond Christmas – a year‑round destination
While the holiday season is the centerpiece, Benson hopes the venue will become a destination regardless of the time of year. “People are watching and are listening,” she said. “People have come and done case studies here to see how they can recreate this.” The venue is also courting corporate groups for private events, expanding its impact beyond seasonal tourism.
General admission tickets for this year’s festivities begin on Black Friday, priced at $18.50 for adults and $1 for children under seven. The affordable pricing encourages families from across the region to experience the magic.
Community pride and family fun
For Millersburg families, Mustard Seed Hill offers a safe, family‑friendly environment where children can marvel at the lights and adults can enjoy a festive outing without traveling far from home. The event aligns with the town’s traditional values, providing a wholesome holiday experience that reinforces community bonds.
As the lights continue to illuminate the town, Mustard Seed Hill stands as a testament to how local initiative, faith in community, and a commitment to family can turn a small Kentucky town into a shining example of holiday spirit and economic renewal.
