On Wednesday evening, the close‑knit community of Mt. Lebanon gathered inside St. Bernard Church for a solemn service of prayer, reflection, and mourning. The gathering came just one day after a tragic incident that claimed the lives of Patrick Lynch, 42, and his children James, 8, and Caroline, 6.
Remembering the Lynch family
Police described the incident as an apparent fall that resulted in the deaths of the three family members. Neighbors, friends, and local volunteers quickly assembled a makeshift memorial behind a public parking garage near the site, laying flowers and notes in tribute to the family.
“It’s really a tragedy, and we’ll miss them, because their family was so loving,” said Vicky Heffelfinger, a longtime volunteer with Wildlife Water School, a local swim school for children. “We really did love them all so much.”
Kiera Spokart, another instructor at the swim school, echoed the sentiment, adding, “She was a ball of joy. She loved people. Every single time we saw her, she would wave to everyone. She was such a brave girl.” Spokart also noted that Caroline had been taking weekly swim lessons since July and was making steady progress as a swimmer.
Impact on the community
The loss has resonated deeply among those who knew the Lynch family. Heffelfinger recalled conversations with the family, saying, “She loved them so much. Their dad loved them so much.” Spokart described Patrick as “a very attentive father” and expressed disbelief at the suddenness of the tragedy.
Both instructors said the family’s warmth and involvement in the community left a lasting impression. Their dedication to local activities, especially the swim program, helped foster a sense of safety and camaraderie for many families in the area.
Vigil and ongoing support
A vigil is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 5, at 7 p.m. inside St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Mt. Lebanon, offering another opportunity for residents to gather, pray, and support one another.
The community’s response highlights the strength of Mt. Lebanon’s neighborhood bonds, as neighbors continue to offer comfort, share memories, and provide assistance to the Lynch family’s extended relatives during this difficult time.
