MSC Poesia cruise canceled after Coast Guard detains ship in Miami

Miami – The U.S. Coast Guard announced on November 3 that the MSC Poesia was detained at the Port of Miami after inspectors identified deficiencies with the vessel’s onboard systems. The detention, part of the Coast Guard’s Port State Control program, means the ship will remain in port until the issues are corrected and the vessel is cleared for departure.

Detention and cancellation

Capt. Frank Florio, commander of U.S. Coast Guard Sector Miami, said in a press release that the agency could not comment on the specifics of the ongoing examination but confirmed that the identified deficiencies are being addressed with MSC. “When substantial non‑compliance is identified, the Coast Guard may detain a vessel until the deficiencies that prevent its departure are corrected,” the release stated.

Following the detention, MSC Cruises announced that it had made the difficult decision to cancel the scheduled sailing. “We recognize how disappointing and frustrating this news is for our guests, and we sincerely apologize for the disruption to their holiday,” an MSC spokesperson told Fox News Digital. The company added that all guests will receive a full refund of their cruise fare and assistance with travel arrangements home.

Impact on passengers

More than 2,000 passengers were aboard the MSC Poesia when the ship was detained, according to the cruise‑tracking site Cruise Critic. Passengers expressed a mix of disappointment and appreciation for the compensation offered. One Reddit user, who had been on board since September 28, wrote, “Although we’re disappointed that the last part of our extended back‑to‑back cruise was canceled, we appreciate the compensation MSC has offered and the practical help they’re providing to get us home.” Another passenger noted the inconvenience of additional airfare, accommodations, and lost paid time off.

Legal considerations

Maritime attorney Alex Perez of Lipcon, Margulies & Winkleman explained that it is rare for a cruise ship carrying thousands of passengers to be detained rather than simply cited. “The fact that this cruise ship was detained with passengers on board when it was about to embark tells you the Coast Guard found something significant enough to warrant a detention,” Perez said.

He also clarified that while passengers can file individual claims for additional expenses, the standard cruise contract prohibits class‑action lawsuits. “Cruise ship contracts prohibit class actions, so in a case like this passengers cannot join together in a group litigation to seek relief,” Perez noted.

Future sailing plans

The MSC Poesia was originally scheduled to depart Miami on November 1 and return on November 12, with stops in Jamaica, Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica, Honduras and Belize, according to CruiseMapper. The cruise line has not announced a new departure date, pending the resolution of the Coast Guard’s identified deficiencies.

Coast Guard officials emphasized that the Port State Control program routinely inspects foreign‑flagged vessels calling at U.S. ports to ensure compliance with safety, security and environmental standards. “A lot of cruise ships are foreign‑flagged. That doesn’t change the Coast Guard’s authority over them,” Perez added.

What’s next for travelers?

Passengers affected by the cancellation are encouraged to contact MSC Cruises directly for refund processing and assistance with rebooking or alternative travel arrangements. The Coast Guard will continue its inspection process, and MSC will work to correct the deficiencies so the MSC Poesia can safely resume service.
