Motorco’s Kitchen Annex Grew Up. Geer Street Garden Is Its Own Thing Now

I went to Piedmont for the first time expecting something formal. The name, the location on Hillsborough Road, the fact that a friend described it as a place that “takes North Carolina food seriously” — all of it made me picture white tablecloths and hushed voices. What I found instead was a small, dimly lit room that felt more like somebody’s very good idea of a dinner party than a restaurant with a culinary agenda.

Piedmont has been operating on the western edge of Durham’s Watts-Hillandale neighborhood since 2010. It seats maybe fifty people on a good night. The bar takes up a meaningful chunk of that space, which tells you something about the priorities here. The lighting is low enough to be genuinely comfortable, not performatively moody. There’s art on the walls that actually came from somewhere, not ordered from a hospitality catalog.

The menu changes often enough that I can’t promise what you’ll find, but the approach stays consistent: local farms, seasonal vegetables treated as main characters rather than side notes, and proteins that get handled with some care. On my last visit I had a roasted duck leg with stone fruit and a grain I didn’t recognize until I asked the server — it was emmer wheat from a farm up near Hillsborough. The side of braised greens had a hit of vinegar that kept the whole plate from feeling heavy. My friend ordered a mushroom dish that was so good she stopped talking for a few minutes, which is not like her.

The wine list is shorter than you might expect from a place this serious about food, but everything on it is there for a reason. The staff knows it well. I asked about a skin-contact white I didn’t recognize and got a real answer, not a memorized blurb. That kind of confidence without condescension is rarer than it should be.

Prices are honest for what you’re getting. Appetizers run around twelve to sixteen dollars, mains typically land between twenty-six and thirty-six. It’s not cheap, but it’s not performing expensiveness either. For a dinner that covers two courses and a couple of glasses of wine, budget around seventy to eighty dollars a person before tip.

I’d recommend going on a weeknight if your schedule allows. It books up on Fridays and Saturdays, and the room at full capacity loses a little of its intimacy. A Tuesday in October, when the kitchen is working with whatever just came in from the farms — that’s when this place is at its best. Reservations through their website are straightforward; I’ve never had a problem getting a table with a few days’ notice on an off night.

What I keep coming back to is that Piedmont doesn’t seem to be trying to win a debate about what North Carolina cuisine is or should be. It just cooks with what’s around, gets the technique right, and trusts that a meal built that way will be worth your time. Most nights, it is.
