Springfield, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) unveiled a proposal to expand a busy segment of Kansas Expressway, adding a third lane in each direction between Grand Street and Sunshine Street. The project, estimated at $7.64 million, also includes bridge rehabilitation, new sidewalks and a median to curb left‑turn traffic.
Project details
MoDOT says traffic volumes have outgrown the existing four‑lane roadway. The plan calls for widening the bridge over Fassnight Creek and constructing a multi‑use path on the south side of the Grand Street intersection. A new sidewalk would run along the east side of Kansas Expressway from Grand to Elfindale.
At the Catalpa intersection, a median would be installed to block left turns from both directions, improving traffic flow and safety. Construction is slated to begin in spring 2028, with Kansas Expressway remaining open throughout the work. Drivers can expect narrower lanes, occasional overnight closures and temporary driveway disruptions.
Community response
Local residents and business owners expressed support for the wider road, noting that the improvements would make commuting faster and safer for drivers and pedestrians alike. They also indicated confidence that the construction impacts would be manageable.
Public involvement
MoDOT will hold a public meeting on Tuesday from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus on Grand Street. The session is a “come‑and‑go” format with no formal presentation; comments can also be submitted online via MoDOT’s website.
