Missouri fans gave a warm ovation Saturday night as running back Ahmad Hardy stepped onto the field for the No. 23 Tigers in Columbia. Hardy entered the game late in the first quarter, just six months after being wounded in the leg during a shooting at an outdoor concert in Laurel, Mississippi.
Hardy’s comeback on the scoreboard
Although his time on the field was brief, Hardy contributed two carries for five yards, helping Missouri secure a 34‑10 victory over the Arkansas Razorbacks. The Tigers’ leading rusher, Jamal Roberts, added 138 yards and a touchdown, but he noted that seeing Hardy back in the lineup lifted the entire offense.
“He was in good spirits,” Roberts said. “Probably a little emotional knowing what he went through, but he’s still in good spirits, still has high hopes and is in good prayers.”
From shooting victim to healed athlete
Hardy, who set a school record with 16 touchdowns and 1,649 rushing yards in 2025, was attending a concert on May 10 when a stray bullet struck his leg. Police arrested a suspect and charged him with two felony counts of aggravated assault. Recovery required a metal rod to be inserted into Hardy’s femur, according to head coach Eli Drinkwitz.
Hardy described the physical aspect of his return as “nothing different,” emphasizing that his body is fully healed. Mentally, he leaned heavily on his faith and the support network around him.
“Whatever the good Lord said I can do, then I can do it,” Hardy said. “I’m a very strong mental person. If I put my mind to it, I can do it.”
Coach Drinkwitz praises perseverance
Following the win, Coach Drinkwitz praised Hardy’s determination. “I’m really, really proud of Ahmad,” he said. “It’s been a long road to get back here. It’s been a very difficult challenge for everybody. To be able to come in here and get us a big first down, I’m really proud of him.”
Faith and community support
Hardy credited his Bible reading and the constant encouragement from coaches, staff and teammates for keeping his spirit steady during the long rehab. The story resonates with many Missouri families who value perseverance, faith and the strength of community.
As the Tigers look ahead to the rest of the season, Hardy’s return serves as a reminder that with God’s help and the backing of a supportive community, even the toughest obstacles can be overcome.
