On Wednesday, Oct. 14, Milwaukee police officers attempted a routine traffic stop for reckless driving near 58th and Hadley. The driver, a 22‑year‑old man, refused to pull over, prompting a pursuit that lasted several minutes.
Crash and confrontation
The chase concluded near the intersection of 48th and Hadley when the suspect’s vehicle slammed into a tree. Both occupants fled the scene on foot. Officers quickly moved in, apprehending the passenger, a 19‑year‑old man, after a brief foot chase.
The driver, however, continued to resist. When a Milwaukee police officer tried to place him under arrest, the suspect attempted to seize the officer’s firearm. Failing that, he removed the magazine from the officer’s vest pouch and struck the officer repeatedly with it. The blows caused substantial injuries, though the officer’s condition is not life‑threatening.
Officer’s condition and response
The injured officer, a 32‑year‑old with more than four years of service, was transported to a local hospital for treatment. He has since been released and is recovering at home.
Additional officers arrived on the scene and assisted in securing the driver. Law‑enforcement officials recovered multiple firearms and suspected narcotics from the suspect’s vehicle.
Legal next steps
Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office will review the evidence and file criminal charges against the driver. The department thanked the community for its cooperation and reminded residents that reckless driving endangers everyone on the road.
Public‑safety reminder
Police chiefs across the state continue to urge motorists to obey traffic laws and comply with officer commands. When drivers refuse to stop, pursuits can quickly become dangerous for officers, suspects, and bystanders alike. The Milwaukee Police Department encourages anyone with information about the incident to contact its tip line.
