Military Avenue in Green Bay Closed Nov. 2‑11 for Railroad Crossing Improvements

GREEN BAY, Wis. — The City of Green Bay announced that a portion of Military Avenue on the west side will be closed to all traffic for a ten‑day period beginning Monday, Nov. 2 and ending Wednesday, Nov. 11. The closure is necessary to complete upgrades to the railroad crossing that runs between Western Avenue and Leo Street.

Detour route and access

Motorists are asked to follow a clearly signed detour that routes traffic onto West Mason Street, then south on Oneida Street, and finally onto Shawano Avenue. The city has placed signage at key intersections to guide drivers and minimize confusion. According to the Department of Public Works, the detour will accommodate the normal flow of vehicles while the work crew focuses on the crossing improvements.

Impact on residents and businesses

City officials emphasized that access to residences and businesses along the closed segment will be maintained. Delivery trucks, emergency vehicles, and service providers will be granted temporary permits to enter the work zone as needed. Local business owners were notified in advance and encouraged to plan for the temporary change in traffic patterns.

Purpose of the railroad crossing upgrades

The railroad crossing project is part of a broader effort to enhance safety for both motorists and train operators. Upgrades include installing new signaling equipment, improving road surface conditions around the tracks, and adding better lighting to increase visibility at night. The work aligns with state transportation guidelines that call for regular maintenance of high‑traffic rail intersections.

Community response

Neighborhood associations have expressed appreciation for the city’s proactive communication. “We’re grateful the city gave us plenty of notice and a clear detour plan,” said a resident of the West Side. “It helps us keep our daily routines running smoothly while the work gets done.”

Timeline and next steps

The construction crew is scheduled to begin work early each morning on Nov. 2, with an anticipated completion date of Nov. 11. Once the upgrades are finished, Military Avenue will reopen to normal traffic flow. The city will monitor the site throughout the project and will post any additional updates on its official website and social media channels.

Contact information

For questions about the detour or to request a temporary access permit, residents and business owners can contact the Green Bay Department of Public Works at (920) 555‑1234 or visit the city’s website at greenbaywi.gov/publicworks.
