DAWSON COUNTY, Texas – A tragic traffic collision claimed the life of a Midland resident on Saturday afternoon. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), the incident occurred at approximately 3:50 p.m. on State Highway 349, just north of the intersection with Farm to Market Road 829.
What happened
Police reports indicate a 2016 Volvo was towing a trailer eastbound on SH 349 when the driver slowed to make a left turn onto FM 829. A Toyota Corolla traveling behind the Volvo failed to control its speed, collided with the rear of the trailer, and was pushed forward. The driver of the Corolla, identified as 46‑year‑old Carlos Luis Lara Rosales of Midland, died at the scene. The driver of the Volvo was not injured.
Investigation
DPS officers are conducting a standard investigation into the crash. The agency will examine vehicle speed, road conditions, and any possible mechanical issues. Findings will be released when the investigation is complete.
Community response
Local officials expressed condolences to the family of Mr. Rosales and reminded motorists of the importance of safe following distances, especially when large vehicles or trailers are involved. “We urge drivers to stay alert, maintain appropriate speed, and give extra space when traveling behind towed vehicles,” a DPS spokesperson said.
Road safety reminder
State Highway 349 is a major north‑south corridor that sees a mix of passenger cars, commercial trucks, and farm equipment. The Texas Department of Transportation advises drivers to be especially cautious at intersections such as FM 829, where turning movements can create blind spots for drivers following larger vehicles.
Next steps
The crash remains under investigation, and DPS will update the public as additional information becomes available. Anyone with further details about the incident is encouraged to contact the Dawson County Sheriff’s Office.
