The Middleton Community School recently relocated to a new, modest‑sized facility behind the Middleton Community Center on Main Street. Despite the smaller footprint, Director Sharlae Watkins emphasizes that the school’s mission – offering wrap‑around support to students and families – remains unchanged.
Essential Services Remain Available
Families can still receive clothing, household essentials and nutritious meals at the new site. “It’s so important for our kids to be fed, clothed and feel the support all the way around,” Watkins said. In the first five days of November, 20 families visited the school, underscoring the community’s need for these resources.
Funding Not Affected by Recent Levy Vote
Voters recently rejected a supplemental levy proposed by the Middleton School District, prompting questions about the school’s financial stability. Watkins clarified that the Community School’s operations are funded through grants and private donations, not the levy, so services will continue uninterrupted.
New Partnerships and Programs
The school is expanding its offerings. A neighborhood library is in development, and a partnership with the Idaho Foodbank will increase food distribution to students and their families. “We want to be another resource and start distributing food to our students,” Watkins explained.
Winter Needs and Ongoing Requests
As colder weather approaches, demand for winter clothing has risen, while some household hygiene items are running low. Watkins noted a current shortage of toilet paper and other hygiene supplies, and the school is allowing families to select five essential items from what is available.
Community Support Drives Success
Watkins attributes the school’s continued operation to the generosity of Middleton residents. “It only works because it’s Middleton and because it’s such a great community,” she said. Those interested in donating or volunteering can find more information through the Middleton School District’s website.
Looking Ahead
The Middleton Community School’s move demonstrates resilience and a steadfast commitment to serving local families. With ongoing community backing, the school aims to broaden its impact, ensuring that every child in Middleton has access to the basic necessities that enable them to thrive academically and personally.
