Madison, Wis. – The iconic yellow, green and orange sunburst chairs that line the Memorial Union Terrace will be taken down on Monday, Oct. 26, as the Wisconsin Union prepares for winter storage. Approximately 2,000 chairs will be removed, officially ending the 2026 Terrace season.
Students say goodbye to a beloved campus landmark
For many University of Wisconsin‑Madison students, the Terrace is more than a place to sit; it is a hub for studying, socializing and enjoying the view of Lake Mendota. Junior Chase Lalonde, who spent Sunday studying for a biochemistry exam on the Terrace, said the chairs’ removal feels “really sad.” He added, “The colors of the chairs with the trees changing is, like, beautiful with this weather, too. I’m going to really miss it. It’s one of my favorite study spots on campus.”
Lalonde described the Terrace as “the heart and soul of UW‑Madison,” noting that its location, scenery and atmosphere create a unique campus experience.
Historical tradition and upcoming events
The Terrace first opened in 1928, with its inaugural full season in 1929. The Memorial Union and the Terrace will celebrate their 100th anniversary in 2028, a milestone that underscores the long‑standing role of the chairs in campus life.
Although the chairs will be stored for the winter, Wisconsin Union officials emphasized that the Union’s programming continues year‑round. “The Terrace chairs are heading into winter storage, but Wisconsin Union‑hosted music, movies, art, recreation, dining and community continue year‑round, including at the almost‑century‑old Memorial Union,” said Shauna Breneman, public relations and communications officer for the Union.
Breneman also highlighted the importance of patron support. “We’re grateful to everyone who joins us during Terrace season and throughout the year. Patrons’ ticket and dining purchases help support free and low‑cost events, student leadership opportunities and spaces to gather,” she said.
Winter activities and the return of the chairs
During the colder months, the Union will keep its dining options, art exhibitions, performances and recreational activities open to students and community members. The annual Winter Carnival is scheduled for Feb. 4‑6, 2027, offering seasonal fun for the campus and surrounding community.
The chairs are expected to return in spring 2027, bringing back the bright colors that many students, like Lalonde, say make the Terrace a lively place.
What this means for campus life
While the removal of the chairs changes the visual landscape of the Terrace, the Union’s continued programming ensures that the spirit of the tradition lives on. Students and visitors can still gather, study and enjoy the historic Union building throughout the winter, awaiting the return of the beloved chairs next spring.
