Measles Cases Rise in Greene and Benton Counties – Health Officials Urge Vaccination

Springfield, Mo. – Health officials are warning residents of Greene, Benton and several neighboring counties that measles cases are on the rise. The latest count shows a total of 18 confirmed infections, including four new cases in a single household in Benton County.

What officials are saying

Anna Kremer, a spokesperson for the Springfield‑Greene County Health Department, explained that measles is highly contagious and early symptoms often mimic a common cold. “You’ll have a runny nose, coughing, a fever. And then four to seven days after that, we’ll start to see the kind of telltale measles rash,” she said.

Kremer emphasized that people without immunity are most at risk. “Anyone who doesn’t have immunity to it would be the most vulnerable, so those are often kids under the age that we typically give the MMR vaccine, potentially older adults if their immunity has waned,” she added.

Vaccination rates and protection

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that the MMR vaccine is safe and about 97% effective after two doses. However, vaccination coverage among kindergarten‑age children has slipped from 95% five years ago to 92% this school year, leaving roughly 280,000 children unprotected.

“Getting the MMR vaccine is a great prevention method because it is 97% effective once you’ve had the two doses,” Kremer said. She urged anyone unsure about their vaccination status to consult their primary‑care provider.

Local families respond

Ty and Kalani Miller, a Springfield father and mother, said they were unaware of the recent cases but plan to take extra precautions. “Nowadays, I know it’s out here now, so we’re definitely going to be cautious and make sure you wash our hands, right? Right? Make sure we cover them when we sneeze. We want to protect these kids out here in our community,” the Millers said.

They added that schools remain a primary place where germs spread, underscoring the importance of parental vigilance and vaccination.

Potential complications

Measles can lead to serious health complications, including pneumonia, encephalitis and, in rare cases, death. Health officials stress that early detection and vaccination are the best defenses against these outcomes.

For residents who suspect exposure or who have questions about the MMR vaccine, the Springfield‑Greene County Health Department recommends contacting local clinics or the health department directly.

What you can do

  • Check your vaccination records – ensure two doses of MMR have been administered.
  • Practice good hygiene – wash hands frequently and cover coughs or sneezes.
  • Stay informed – follow updates from the health department and local news outlets.

By taking these steps, families can help curb the spread of measles and protect the most vulnerable members of the community.
