Marist Catholic High School in Eugene is set to host its final home game of the season on Friday, Oct. 23, at 7 p.m. The Spartans (3‑4, 2‑2 league) will face No. 27 South Umpqua (3‑4, 1‑1 league) in a matchup that could determine their chances for a state playoff berth.
Recent turmoil and on‑field promise
Marist has endured significant off‑field drama this month. After a dominant 63‑0 halftime lead over Cottage Grove on Oct. 9, the game was called off in the second half, and three‑year head coach Zach Loboy was dismissed. Interim coach Jake Lowther, a former offensive line coach from Cascade High School, has taken the reins, though the school declined an interview request.
The program also mourned the loss of Sweet Home junior varsity player Mason Flores, who died from an injury sustained in a Sept. 28 JV game against Marist. The school honored his memory with a moment of silence and helmet stickers.
Offensive firepower led by senior quarterback
Despite the upheaval, the Spartans’ offense remains potent. Senior quarterback Brody Gilliam, who missed most of last season due to injury, is now back and has guided the team to at least 34 points in each of its four league contests and 28 or more in non‑league games. Wide receiver Grady Hazen provides a reliable target, and the unit hopes to capitalize on Gilliam’s resurgence to secure a win.
South Umpqua’s stout defense
South Umpqua’s defense has been disciplined, allowing no more than 21 points in any league game this year. Their lone league victory came against winless Cottage Grove, and they have kept strong opponents such as Junction City and North Bend to 21 points or fewer. If Gilliam can dissect this defense, Marist could roll to a crucial victory; otherwise, the season may become more challenging.
Other local matchups this week
Friday’s schedule also includes several other Lane County contests: No. 14 Churchill vs. No. 30 Eagle Point, No. 32 North Eugene vs. No. 10 Springfield, and No. 6 Junction City vs. No. 16 North Valley, among others. These games will further shape the playoff picture across Special Districts 3, 4, and 5.
All games kick off at 7 p.m. unless noted otherwise. Rankings are based on Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) ratings within each division.
