At the Alvin Independent School District board meeting on Oct. 20, trustees examined a preliminary design for a major expansion of Manvel High School. The proposal, prepared by Houston‑based PBK Architects, calls for a new dance gym, a culinary laboratory and a larger career‑technical education (CTE) wing. The district says the additions will give students more hands‑on learning opportunities and better support families in the surrounding neighborhoods.
Design features aimed at safety and convenience
PBK Architects emphasized traffic improvements as a core part of the plan. Separate drop‑off lanes for parents and school buses will reduce congestion, and a dedicated pedestrian pathway will serve students who live in the Bluewater Lakes and Valencia subdivisions. While the design does not add general parking, additional lots will be built to serve the expanded CTE facilities.
Expanded CTE and special‑education spaces
The CTE expansion will include new classrooms for health science, linked to promote collaboration between related courses. Special‑education classrooms will also be enlarged, featuring individual restrooms and kitchen areas to meet diverse student needs. The district’s documents note that these upgrades are intended to create a more integrated learning environment for all students.
Funding comes from the district’s recent bond program
Manvel High’s redesign is financed by the 2024 voter‑approved bond program. The bond allocates $225 million for new campus construction, including two elementary schools, a junior high and a replacement campus for Walt Disney Elementary. An additional $144 million is earmarked for renovating aging facilities and expanding capacity at existing schools, such as Alvin High School and Manvel High School.
Next steps
PBK Architects stressed that the current drawings are preliminary and will be refined as the project moves forward. The board will continue to review updates and consider community feedback before any final decisions are made.
Parents, students and local residents are encouraged to stay informed through district communications and upcoming board meetings, ensuring the expansion reflects the needs of the Manvel community.
