Mandan mother plans vigil as she seeks answers one year after son’s train death

One year after her son was struck by a train on Oct. 26, 2025, Mandan resident Brittney Arnett is still searching for answers. Hoksila “Smoke” Royal Running Bear, 18, died when a freight train hit him near Memorial Highway in Mandan. Arnett says his death was not an accident and has spent the past twelve months urging detectives to uncover what happened.

Family remembers and seeks closure

Arnett’s phone is filled with the last photos she took of Hoksila, captured less than 24 hours before the tragedy. “It’s so hard to look back at these pictures,” she said, holding the images as a reminder of the day she lost her son.

She also cares for Hoksila’s five‑year‑old daughter, Arianna, who she says shares her father’s energy. “She’ll say things that remind me of him,” Arnett explained, noting that Arianna’s presence keeps her pushing authorities for answers.

Police investigation remains open

Mandan police have not ruled out homicide in the case. The department says the investigation file has been turned over to the Morton County Prosecutor’s Office for a decision on possible charges, but the prosecutor’s office has not responded to requests for comment. Arnett expressed frustration at the lack of new leads, saying, “It’s very difficult” and “We hope and pray for answers.”

Vigil planned to honor Hoksila’s memory

Arnett will hold a vigil on Monday at 6 p.m. on BisMan Avenue, near the railroad crossing where Hoksila was killed. The gathering is intended to give the family and community a chance to remember the young man and to pray for the truth they seek.

“We hope the detectives find what they need so that his daughter can have answers,” Arnett said, emphasizing the importance of closure for Arianna.

Community response

Neighbors and local faith leaders have expressed sympathy for the family, offering prayers and support. While the investigation continues, the vigil provides a focal point for the community to stand with the Arnett family during this painful anniversary.

Arnett remains hopeful that the ongoing investigation will eventually bring clarity. “I didn’t know that was going to be our last day to make memories,” she reflected, holding onto the photos as a reminder of the life she lost.
