HEMPSTEAD COUNTY, Ark. – A tragic boating accident occurred on Millwood Lake early Friday morning. A 52‑year‑old man was discovered deceased after a boat was spotted traveling in circles near Saratoga Landing.
Law‑enforcement officers from the Hempstead County Sheriff’s Office arrived on scene at 8:16 a.m. and recovered the victim’s body close to the boat, according to Randy Zellers, deputy chief of communications for the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission (AGF). The man’s name has not been released.
Investigators noted that the victim was not wearing a life jacket at the time of the incident, a factor that likely contributed to the fatal outcome. Both the AGF and the sheriff’s office are conducting a thorough investigation to determine the exact circumstances that led to the drowning.
“We urge all boaters on Millwood Lake to wear properly fitted life jackets and to exercise caution, especially in areas with heavy traffic or changing conditions,” Zellers said. “Our teams are working diligently to piece together what happened and to provide answers to the family and community.
Millwood Lake, a popular recreation spot for fishing, boating, and water sports, draws visitors from across the ArkLaTex region. The lake’s shoreline includes several public access points, with Saratoga Landing being one of the most frequented. Local officials regularly remind the public that safety equipment, including life jackets, should be readily available on every vessel.
The investigation remains open, and authorities have asked anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who has additional information to contact the Hempstead County Sheriff’s Office at (903) 555‑0123.
Safety Reminder for Boaters
Arkansas law requires that all individuals on a boat under 13 years of age wear a U.S. Coast Guard‑approved life jacket. While the law does not mandate life jackets for adults, safety experts strongly recommend that every person on board be equipped with one.
Boaters are also encouraged to check weather forecasts, avoid alcohol consumption while operating a vessel, and stay alert to other watercraft in the area. The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission offers free safety courses and resources for residents and visitors alike.
Community members who wish to support the family of the deceased or learn more about water safety initiatives can contact local churches, civic groups, or the AGF outreach office.
