Missoula Police Department responded to multiple trespassing reports on Fairview Avenue on the night of October 23, 2026. At approximately 8:58 p.m., officers were dispatched to a residence where homeowner Jane Doe said an unknown man entered her home while she was in bed. Doe described the intruder as heavily intoxicated, wet, barefoot, and wearing jeans and a striped shirt. She struck the man with a roll of paper towels, ordered him to leave, and eventually pushed him out the front door before calling 911. No items were taken and the man did not act aggressively toward her.
Additional Incidents on Fairview Avenue
At about 9:49 p.m., police responded to a second call on the same street involving a man allegedly attempting to break into multiple properties. An owner reported hearing noises like a door being kicked. Officers found damage to the doorknob and door frame of a detached shop, estimating repair costs around $200. Ring surveillance footage later showed a man approaching the shop, climbing a chain‑link fence, and leaving the property.
Arrest Near Clark Street
At roughly 10:59 p.m., officers answered a call from an apartment complex on Clark Street, three blocks from Fairview Avenue. A caller reported a man entering her Toyota without permission and later striking a door at a nearby storage area. Police located a man matching the earlier descriptions and identified him as 34‑year‑old Joseph Reich. Reich was taken into custody after officers ordered him to show his hands; he was later placed on the ground and a hypodermic needle was found in his pocket.
Charges and Statements
During a Miranda‑rights interview, Reich, who appeared extremely intoxicated, said he was looking for his girlfriend and could not recall attempting to enter any residences. He reportedly added, “I must be going crazy, I must be nuts.” Reich has been charged with felony burglary, two counts of criminal mischief, disorderly conduct, and criminal trespass to vehicles. He is being held at the Missoula County Detention Facility.
The Missoula Police Department continues to investigate the incidents and urges anyone with additional information to contact authorities.
