Southern Idaho families looking for affordable ways to celebrate the season will find a full slate of events across the Magic Valley. Most of the activities are free or low‑cost, and several include toy or food drives that help local children and families in need.
Christmas in the Nighttime Sky – Filer
Held the Friday after Thanksgiving (Nov. 27 in 2026), the Christmas in the Nighttime Sky celebration has become the unofficial kickoff to the holiday season in the region. After moving from Kimberly Nurseries to the Twin Falls County Fairgrounds in Filer, the event now offers a free chili and Idaho potato dinner from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., a visit from Santa, and a fireworks display choreographed to Christmas music on KOOL 96.5 at about 7:30 p.m. Admission is one new, unwrapped toy per family, which is donated to children in need throughout the Magic Valley. In 2025, roughly 3,300 visitors attended, so early arrival is advised.
Festival of Lights Parade – Downtown Twin Falls
The Festival of Lights Parade rolls down Main Avenue on Friday, Dec. 4, beginning at 6 p.m. Floats illuminated with thousands of lights travel from Dierkes Street to Jerome Street, followed by a tree lighting at the Downtown Commons across from City Hall. Twin Falls Police have begun closing portions of Main Avenue as early as 3 p.m.; parked cars risk being towed. Attendees often warm up at O’Dunken’s, a local eatery offering dinner and drinks while they wait for the parade.
Christmas in the Garden – Orton Botanical Garden, Twin Falls
Orton Botanical Garden lights up its grounds from Nov. 27 through Dec. 30. Open nightly from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. (last admission at 9:30 p.m.), admission is $7 for adults, with children 12 and under free. The garden’s gravel paths are best navigated with motorized wheelchairs, and a portable restroom is available on site. Volunteers are still needed for set‑up in November; interested residents can call (208) 734‑7959.
Lost in Christmas – Burley Straw Maze
The former Halloween Straw Maze transforms into a holiday maze with Christmas lights. Opening nights include Nov. 27‑28 and a series of Fridays and Saturdays in December, plus weekday evenings Dec. 21‑23. Hours run from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Admission is $10 on Fridays and Dec. 21‑23, $12 on Saturdays. In addition to the maze, visitors can enjoy giant slides, a zip line, a straw Christmas tree and holiday movies. The maze is located at 845 E 500 S, just off I‑84 Exit 216.
Christmas City USA – Rupert
Rupert’s historic square returns as “Christmas City USA” with a market opening Nov. 27‑28 and Dec. 4‑5. Vendor spaces are already filled, and the city will release additional dates later in the season.
Live Nativity Drive‑Thru – Grace Church, Rupert
Grace Church offers a free, drive‑thru live nativity on Thursday and Friday, Dec. 10‑11, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Cars travel past stations that depict the story of Jesus’ birth. No registration is required.
Living Nativity – Twin Falls (TBA)
A family‑hosted living nativity in Twin Falls traditionally features live animals, costumed participants, a marketplace and a recreation of Bethlehem. The 2025 event ran Dec. 11‑13, with a request for canned food donations to local pantries. Organizers have not yet confirmed a 2026 schedule, but updates will be posted as soon as they are available.
All of these events provide opportunities for families to celebrate the season, support charitable causes and enjoy the unique charm of the Magic Valley. Readers are encouraged to check each organization’s Facebook page or website for the latest details before attending.
