Magic City Classic Boosts Birmingham and Jefferson County Economy and Community Spirit

Mayor Randall Woodfin highlighted the Magic City Classic as a cornerstone of Birmingham’s heritage, noting its 85‑year legacy and the city’s commitment to preserving the event for future generations. The classic, a week‑long celebration featuring a football game between Alabama A&M and Alabama State, draws visitors from across the nation and fuels local businesses.

Regional Leaders Praise the Festival’s Ripple Effect

Irondale Mayor James Stewart, an alumnus of Tennessee State University, emphasized that what happens in Birmingham reverberates throughout Jefferson County. “So goes Birmingham, so goes the rest of the region,” he said, urging support for the classic’s success to benefit surrounding communities.

Tracy Threadford, mayor of Tarrant, described the classic as vital during her city’s rebuilding phase, noting opportunities for internships and workforce development. “Someone’s going to replace me one day,” she added, pointing to the event’s role in cultivating the next generation of leaders.

Mayors from Pleasant Grove, Clay and Homewood echoed the sentiment, highlighting strong HBCU alumni networks in their cities and the importance of retaining young talent. Homewood Mayor Jennifer Andress summed it up: “A rising tide lifts all boats.”

Contract Renewal and Future Planning

This year marks the final year of the current agreement between the City of Birmingham, Alabama State University and Alabama A&M. The contract allows for two possible three‑year extensions if all parties agree in writing, giving officials time to assess the event’s impact and explore enhancements.

The Birmingham Business Alliance’s Magic City HBCU Breakfast, one of many week‑long events, attracted mayors from across Jefferson County, reinforcing the collaborative spirit that the classic inspires.

Economic and Cultural Benefits

Beyond the football game, the classic week includes concerts, panel discussions, parties and a parade through downtown Birmingham. These activities generate significant economic activity, from hotel bookings to restaurant sales, and provide a platform for local entrepreneurs to showcase their offerings.

In addition, the city opened a memorial exhibit at City Hall featuring archival photographs and memorabilia dating back to the 1950s. The exhibit, titled “A Classic Tradition: The History, Culture & Legacy of the Magic City Classic,” will remain on display through the end of the year, offering residents and visitors a deeper appreciation of the event’s heritage.

Looking Ahead

With the contract renewal window approaching, city officials and university partners are poised to discuss ways to expand the classic’s reach while preserving its historic character. The continued collaboration promises to keep the Magic City Classic a vibrant, unifying force for Birmingham and the broader Jefferson County community.
