Madame Zaza’s and the Sweet Chaos of Buford Highway’s Best Ethiopian Table

There is a particular kind of restaurant that does not try to impress you with its décor or its Instagram-ready plating, and yet somehow leaves you more impressed than any sleek downtown dining room ever could. Desta Ethiopian Kitchen, tucked into a low-key strip on Buford Highway in Chamblee, is exactly that kind of place — and if you have not yet pulled up a chair and torn into a shared injera with people you love, you are missing one of Atlanta’s most genuinely transporting dining experiences.

Desta has been quietly drawing devoted regulars since it opened, and it earns that loyalty the old-fashioned way: with honest, deeply flavorful food made from recipes that have been refined over generations. The restaurant is named after its owner, Desta Haile, an Ethiopian-born host whose warmth sets the tone the moment you walk through the door. This is not a corporate interpretation of Ethiopian cuisine. This is the real thing, cooked with care and served with pride.

The centerpiece of any visit is the injera — the spongy, slightly tangy sourdough flatbread that doubles as both plate and utensil. Orders arrive as a colorful mosaic of stews, salads, and sautéed vegetables arranged across one enormous round of injera. You tear off a piece, scoop up a mound of misir wot (a silky, slow-cooked red lentil stew spiced with berbere), or a bite of gomen (tender collard greens cooked with garlic and ginger), and the whole ritual of communal eating becomes something almost meditative. There is no silverware needed, and no formality required — just a table full of food and the understanding that sharing is the whole point.

The lamb tibs are a must-order for anyone who eats meat: tender chunks sautéed with onions, tomatoes, and jalapeño until the edges caramelize into something extraordinary. Vegetarians will find equal treasure here, and Desta is genuinely one of the best plant-based dining destinations in the city without marketing itself as such. The vegetarian combination platter is a revelation — a riot of textures and spices that makes you forget entirely that nothing on the plate came from an animal.

The space itself is warm and unpretentious, with Ethiopian artwork on the walls and the kind of background hum that tells you the room is full of people who are genuinely happy to be there. Service is attentive without being hovering. Tej, the traditional Ethiopian honey wine, is available and worth ordering alongside your meal — it is sweeter than most wines and pairs beautifully with the heat of the berbere-spiced dishes.

Buford Highway has long been Atlanta’s most exciting culinary corridor, a stretch of international restaurants that rivals anything you will find in cities twice Atlanta’s size. Desta sits comfortably among the very best of them. It is the kind of restaurant that makes you want to bring someone who has never tried Ethiopian food just so you can watch their face when the platter arrives.

Plan to linger. Order more than you think you need. And do not skip dessert — the house-made pastries rotate and are invariably worth asking about. Desta Ethiopian Kitchen is not a place you visit once. It is a place you start thinking about on the drive home.
