Rogersville, Mo. – With the holiday season fast approaching, the Logan‑Rogersville Fire Protection District (FPD) is reminding residents to take simple precautions when decorating their homes. Assistant Chief Tim Clarkson explained that a few careful steps can prevent fires, electrical shocks and injuries, keeping families safe and reducing the need for emergency responders.
Use the Right Lights and Fasteners
When hanging lights outdoors, make sure the product is labeled for outdoor use. Outdoor‑rated light strips are built to withstand moisture and temperature changes. Secure them with plastic fasteners rather than nails or staples, which can damage the wiring and create a fire hazard.
Choose Proper Extension Cords
“If you’re using extension cords, you want to use indoor extension cords for inside the house and outdoor extension cords for outside the house. Anything that’s outside is designed for that element,” Clarkson said. He added that cords should be kept off the ground where water can pool, reducing the risk of moisture entering the connections.
Set Up Ladders Safely
Before climbing, place the ladder on flat, stable ground. “Test it, you know, step up on the first couple of rungs, make sure the ladder is not going to shift if you’re on grass,” Clarkson advised. He also recommended having a second adult stand by to assist or call for help if the ladder becomes unstable.
Inspect Light Strings Before Use
Read the manufacturer’s instructions regarding how many strands can be safely linked together. Older incandescent or halogen strings should be examined for cracked or deteriorated insulation. “If the wires are cracked or the bulbs are stiff, we recommend recycling or discarding them and purchasing new ones,” Clarkson said.
New LED lights are not only cooler to the touch, which reduces fire risk, but they also lower electricity bills compared with older halogen bulbs.
Care for Live Christmas Trees
Live trees should be kept well‑watered and placed at least three feet away from heat sources such as radiators, fireplaces, or space heaters. A dry tree can become a tinderbox in a matter of minutes.
General Safety Reminders
- Never overload electrical outlets or extension cords.
- Turn off all holiday lights when leaving the house or going to bed.
- Keep decorations away from open flames, including candles and fireplaces.
- Store extra lights and cords in a dry place for future use.
The Logan‑Rogersville FPD encourages residents to contact the department with any safety concerns or to report faulty equipment. By following these straightforward guidelines, families can enjoy a bright, festive season while protecting their homes and neighborhoods.
