Dayton residents gathered on Wilburn Avenue tonight for the annual Babaloui Porchfest, a community‑driven concert series aimed at helping children in need across the Miami Valley. Seven local bands set up on a single porch and performed a mix of classic hits and original songs, drawing a crowd of families, neighbors, and supporters.
All proceeds benefit the Gift of Love program
The event’s sole purpose was to raise money for the Gift of Love, a flagship initiative of the For Love of Children Charity (FLOC). According to the organization’s website, Gift of Love provides essential items such as shoes, clothing, and school supplies to more than 12,000 children each year throughout southwestern Ohio.
Organizers emphasize community impact
Long‑time host Robert Mock, who has coordinated the Porchfest for the past four years, explained that the concert is a fun way to give back. “I wanted to give back to my community, and this was a great way to do it,” Mock said. He partnered with Kathy Leggett, co‑founder of the Dayton Music Scene, to bring together musicians and volunteers for the cause.
Leggett, who grew up in the area, shared a personal connection to the charity’s mission. “I understand what it feels like to not have a pair of shoes without holes in them, or not to have clothing that isn’t ripped to shreds and you get made fun of at school,” she said. “My goal is to make sure kids don’t feel that way.”
Future plans and community involvement
Both Mock and Leggett noted that the porch itself serves as a stage, highlighting how ordinary spaces can become platforms for generosity. They are already planning next year’s Porchfest, hoping to expand the lineup and increase the amount of money raised for Gift of Love.
Attendees expressed enthusiasm for the event’s blend of music and charity. Many families brought children to enjoy the performances while learning about the importance of supporting local nonprofits. The atmosphere was described as lively and welcoming, reflecting Dayton’s strong tradition of community service.
How to support Gift of Love
Donations can still be made online through the For Love of Children Charity website, where contributors can specify that their gift be directed to the Gift of Love program. The organization encourages ongoing support, noting that each contribution helps provide essential items to children who might otherwise go without.
