On Sunday, Highview Park filled with costumes, candy and laughter as the Louisville Metro Police Department’s Seventh Division hosted its annual “Halloween in Highview” celebration. The family‑friendly event gave residents a relaxed setting to meet the officers who serve their neighborhoods, reinforcing trust and safety in the community.
Police and families connect
Officer Rocky Landry explained that the gathering helps residents see the “other side of the badge.” “It really does help them understand who we are and the other side of the badge,” he said. Landry added that interacting with children and parents in a non‑emergency environment “humanizes us and helps them understand that we’re just like them.”
About 30 local vendors provided games, treats and Halloween decorations, while children strutted their costumes ranging from classic superheroes to favorite cartoon characters. “It’s my favorite superhero,” said Lincoln Tedesco, proudly dressed as Spider‑Man.
Showcasing public‑safety resources
Families also toured police specialty units, viewed mounted horses and inspected fire‑department equipment up close. Parent Nina Cassity emphasized the importance of familiarizing children with the tools and people that keep neighborhoods safe. “It’s super important for them to see these vehicles and all of the people who work and protect us,” she said.
For many parents, the event offers a secure alternative to traditional door‑to‑door trick‑or‑treating. Chad Tapia noted, “It’s a load off our shoulders. Growing up, you know, it was always fun going door to door. But now the times are changing. It’s better to have events like this where you know it’s safe and organized.”
Safety reminders from officers
Officer Landry took the opportunity to share practical safety tips for families planning to trick‑or‑treat elsewhere. He urged parents to know where their children are, inspect candy before consumption and stay in well‑lit areas.
Organizers and attendees alike said the evening created lasting memories while strengthening the bond between residents and the officers who serve them.
