The Deschutes Public Library is inviting Bend residents to step into the pages of literary history with its fourth annual Literary Ghost Walk. The free, family‑friendly event will take place on Saturday, Oct. 28, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Central Library downtown.
Ghostly authors come to life
Volunteers and local actors will dress as deceased authors and station themselves throughout the library’s reading rooms and corridors. Each “ghost” will share anecdotes about the writer’s life and works, giving attendees a chance to learn about classic and contemporary literature in an entertaining, interactive setting.
Featured authors
Visitors can expect to meet the spirits of a diverse lineup, including poet Mary Oliver, children’s author Eric Carle, novelist Jane Austen, sci‑fi legend Ray Bradbury, visionary Octavia Butler, music icon Dolly Parton and the 17th‑century Mexican writer Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz. The selection reflects a broad range of genres and eras, appealing to readers of all ages.
Costumes encouraged, crafts provided
Attendees are encouraged to come in costume, adding to the festive atmosphere. The library will also host live music and set up family‑friendly craft stations where children can create bookmarks, literary‑themed decorations, and other keepsakes.
New collectible trading cards
For the first time this year, the library will distribute limited‑edition Literary Ghost Walk trading cards. Each card features an illustrated portrait of one of the portrayed authors and a brief description of their most famous works. Participants can collect the cards by visiting each author’s station, turning the walk into a fun scavenger hunt.
Supporting community learning
“The Literary Ghost Walk is a wonderful way to bring the community together around a love of reading,” said a library spokesperson. “We hope families will enjoy the costumes, music and crafts while discovering new books and authors.” The event aligns with the library’s mission to promote literacy, lifelong learning and community engagement.

The Literary Ghost Walk is open to the public and free of charge. No registration is required.
