Lincoln officials outline next steps as city ballot initiatives await final count

Lincoln, Neb. – As the 2026 General Election results continue to be tallied, city officials are providing residents with clear answers about the six local ballot initiatives that appeared on the November ballot. About 9,000 ballots remain uncounted in Lancaster County, meaning the final outcomes are not yet official.

What the initiatives cover

The measures voters considered this year include:

  • Construction of a new volleyball facility.
  • Aligning city elections with statewide election years.
  • Changing the term limits for the mayor.
  • Limiting City Council members to two four‑year terms.
  • Limiting City Council members to three four‑year terms.
  • Allowing certain residents outside city limits to vote in city elections.

Current unofficial results

Unofficial tallies show that four of the proposals have received majority support, while the remaining two are trailing. The city has not yet certified any results, and the final vote count will be confirmed once all ballots are processed.

City leaders’ response

City Council member Brodey Weber emphasized the importance of every vote being counted. “It’s critical that in every election every single vote is counted, and once the election is certified, the City of Lincoln looks forward to doing our part in making sure that laws are enacted accordingly as the voters wish,” Weber said.

City Attorney Yohance Christie added that the legal team will handle the technical updates required to incorporate the voter‑approved language into the city charter. “Our office will do the technical updating but the language that the voters passed on will be put into charter,” Christie explained.

What happens after certification?

Once the election is officially certified, the city will move forward with any charter amendments that received voter approval. This could mean new election schedules, revised term‑limit rules for elected officials, and the establishment of a new volleyball facility, depending on the final outcomes.

Residents who have questions about the initiatives or the certification process are encouraged to contact the City Clerk’s office or visit the official Lincoln city website for updates.

Why these measures matter

Each initiative reflects community priorities ranging from expanding recreational opportunities to ensuring that local governance aligns with broader state election cycles. The proposals also address representation, giving some non‑city residents a voice in municipal decisions, and setting clear limits on the tenure of elected officials to promote fresh leadership.

As the count progresses, Lincoln’s civic leaders remain committed to transparency and to honoring the will of the electorate.
