Lexington, Ky. – On Oct. 4, 2024, Juan Angel Martinez Bustos was shot near his family’s apartment on Devonport Drive. He and his brother were found wounded; Juan Angel was taken to a hospital where he died days later. Two years later, his mother, Gabby Bustos, remains determined to see the case solved.
Mother’s heartfelt plea
Speaking to Lex News in Spanish, Gabby Bustos said, “The day they killed my son, they didn’t just kill him. They killed me too.” She recalled that morning: she was recovering from a prior car accident when Juan Angel told her he was heading out with his brother to get food. Before leaving, he kissed her on the forehead and said, “Mommy, you know that for me you have always been the best mom.”
Minutes after that goodbye, Gabby heard a loud noise. “I never imagined it would be gunshots,” she said, describing the shock that followed. “My son is still traumatized. He was with his brother and saw everything. There are no answers, there is nothing.”
