Lavender and Limestone: Why the Monte L. Bean Life Science Museum Is One of Utah Valley’s Great Surprises

There is a particular kind of wonder that catches you off guard — the kind that has nothing to do with crowds or ticket lines or souvenir shops. You just walk through a door, look up, and feel something shift. That is exactly what happened to me the first time I stepped into the Monte L. Bean Life Science Museum on the campus of Brigham Young University, and I have been recommending it to every visitor who asks what to do in Provo ever since.

Tucked along the eastern edge of the BYU campus, just off North Campus Drive, the Bean Museum is the kind of place that locals sometimes take for granted precisely because it has always been there. Free to the public and open year-round, it does not ask much of you — no parking fees, no timed entry, no audio guide you have to awkwardly return at the end. What it gives you in return is extraordinary: one of the most impressive collections of mounted wildlife specimens in the American West, displayed with a care and artistry that puts many larger natural history institutions to shame.

Walk through the main hall and you are immediately greeted by full-scale dioramas populated by African elephants, Cape buffalo, lions mid-stride, and massive kudu, their spiral horns catching the light from above. The taxidermy here is genuinely world-class — these are not the dusty, slightly unsettling mounts you might remember from a childhood field trip. The poses feel alive. The settings feel considered. You find yourself leaning in to study the texture of a snow leopard’s coat or the particular stillness of a great horned owl perched above your eye line.

Beyond the African savanna hall, the museum branches into North American wildlife, birds of prey, fish, reptiles, and insects. There is an entire room dedicated to the diversity of beetles that will make you rethink everything you thought you knew about the natural world. For families, the interactive stations scattered throughout make this far more than a passive viewing experience — children can touch real specimens, peer through magnifying cases, and ask questions of the knowledgeable staff who seem genuinely delighted to answer them.

What I find most compelling about the Bean Museum is its quiet authority. This is a working research collection with over two million catalogued specimens, many of them used by scientists and students studying biodiversity, conservation, and ecology. The exhibits you see represent only a fraction of what lives in the archives below. There is real science happening here, and you can feel the weight of that purpose in every carefully labeled case and precisely arranged display.

Plan on spending at least ninety minutes, though two hours goes quickly if you let yourself slow down. The museum is open Monday through Friday and on Saturdays, and admission is always free. Parking on the BYU campus is straightforward on weekends and evenings. If you are visiting with children, go on a Saturday morning when the crowds are light and the staff has time to engage with younger visitors.

Provo has no shortage of outdoor adventure and canyon beauty, and you should absolutely chase those too. But on a sweltering July afternoon or a cold February Saturday, the Monte L. Bean Life Science Museum offers something genuinely rare: a place where the natural world is laid out with patience and precision, and where curiosity is the only thing you need to bring through the door.
