Lace Up and Let Go: Gordon Birdwell Park Is McKinney’s Most Underappreciated Green Escape

Some of the best afternoons in McKinney don’t cost a thing and don’t require a reservation. They just require you to show up, lace up your shoes, and follow the sound of water. That’s exactly what I did the first time I wandered into Gordon Birdwell Park and connected to the Southeast Greenway Trail — and I’ve been going back ever since.

Tucked into the southeastern edge of McKinney, this stretch of green space is the kind of place locals quietly love and visitors almost never hear about. The park itself is approachable and well-kept, with shaded picnic areas, open lawns, and a genuine sense of calm that feels miles removed from the buzz of Highway 380. Kids run. Dogs wag. Older couples walk with coffee. It has that easy, unforced energy that no amount of planning can manufacture.

The real draw, though, is what connects to it: the Southeast Greenway Trail, a winding multi-use path that threads through some of McKinney’s most scenic natural corridors. The trail follows creek bottoms and open meadows, dipping under canopies of mature hardwoods before opening again into wide, grassy stretches where you half-expect a deer to step out and pose for a photo. On a cool October morning or a golden late-afternoon in spring, this trail is legitimately beautiful — the kind of beautiful that makes you pull out your phone and try, unsuccessfully, to capture it.

Whether you’re a serious cyclist logging miles, a jogger looking for a route that doesn’t feel like a chore, or just someone who needs to walk and think for an hour, the trail meets you where you are. It’s flat enough to be genuinely enjoyable rather than punishing, and long enough to give you a real sense of escape without requiring half a day. Families with strollers use it. Teenagers skateboard sections of it. Retired neighbors walk it every single morning like a ritual — because it is one.

What keeps drawing me back is the texture of the place. It doesn’t try to impress you. There’s no gift shop, no ticket booth, no crowd management strategy. There’s just good green space, well-maintained paths, and enough quiet to actually hear yourself think. In a city that’s growing as fast as McKinney, that kind of uncomplicated peace is genuinely valuable.

Parking is easy off Eldorado Parkway and surrounding neighborhood access points. Go in the morning if you can — the light through the trees is something else, and the trail is at its most peaceful before the midday heat sets in. Bring water, bring the dog, bring whoever you’ve been meaning to catch up with. Gordon Birdwell Park and the Southeast Greenway Trail will do the rest.

McKinney has no shortage of things to do, eat, and drink — and this publication has covered plenty of them. But sometimes the place that sticks with you most is the one that asks the least of you and gives back the most. This is that place.
