Kosciuszko Park’s Mighty Inline Skating Loop Is Milwaukee’s Most Underrated Summer Thrill

Pull on your skates and forget everything you thought you knew about a Saturday afternoon in Milwaukee. Tucked into the heart of the Historic Mitchell Street corridor on the city’s south side, Kosciuszko Park — affectionately called “Koz Park” by just about everyone who lives nearby — is home to one of the finest inline skating loops in the entire upper Midwest, and somehow, most visitors to the city have no idea it exists.

The loop itself is a smooth, well-maintained asphalt path that winds through beautifully landscaped grounds, past a glistening lagoon, mature oak trees, and open green meadows that practically beg you to slow down and take a breath. On a clear summer morning, the light dances off the water in a way that makes the whole scene feel like a postcard. Whether you are a seasoned skater clocking serious laps or a cautious beginner finding your footing, the path accommodates everyone with gentle grades and wide, forgiving lanes.

What makes Koz Park feel so special is not just the skating itself — it is the atmosphere you skate through. This is a deeply neighborhood park, alive with families grilling out, kids chasing each other across the grass, and elderly residents playing chess at the picnic tables. The south side of Milwaukee has one of the most vibrant Latino communities in the Midwest, and that culture pulses through Kosciuszko Park on weekends. You will often hear cumbia floating across the lawn from a family celebration nearby, and the aroma of something wonderful cooking on a charcoal grill will follow you on at least two or three laps.

The park spans over 56 acres, so there is plenty of room to explore beyond the skating path. After you skate, wander over to the lagoon, where you can rent a paddleboat in warmer months, or simply sit on the bank and watch the ducks work through their day with admirable confidence. There is also a swimming pool on site — a genuine, old-school municipal pool that is a neighborhood institution in its own right — along with tennis courts, baseball diamonds, and a playground that keeps younger visitors thoroughly entertained.

The nearest thing to a food stop right at the park is the surrounding Mitchell Street neighborhood, which is loaded with excellent Mexican bakeries, taquerias, and Latin grocery stores just a short walk or skate away. Do yourself a favor and stop into one of the panaderías on Mitchell Street for a fresh concha and a coffee before or after your loop. It is the kind of fuel that makes the second and third laps feel effortless.

Kosciuszko Park sits at South 36th Street and West Lincoln Avenue, easily reachable from downtown Milwaukee in about ten minutes. There is free parking on site, and the park is open year-round. Summer is the obvious sweet spot for skating, but even in the off-season, the grounds are worth a visit for a brisk walk through one of the city’s most authentic, lived-in green spaces.

Milwaukee has no shortage of parks — it is genuinely one of the most park-rich cities in the country — but Koz Park carries a particular warmth. It is the kind of place where regulars greet each other by name, where the community shows up week after week because the park actually belongs to them. Visiting here as an outsider, you are not a tourist looking in through glass. You are invited right into the middle of it, skates and all.
