Casper, WY — The Kelly Walsh Trojan Marching Band brought home the championship at the Wyoming State Marching Band Festival Saturday night at the Ford Wyoming Center. Scoring 740 points, the Trojans topped the 4A Open division and collected additional honors for their color guard, music, marching and percussion sections.
Performance highlights
The band’s show, titled The Cosmic Frontier, took the audience from a quiet opening to a series of powerful, adventurous pieces that imagined glittering galaxies and other‑worldly portals. The color guard complemented the music with vibrant green costumes and fiery orange flags, while the band members wore a purple “galaxy cowboy” uniform that reinforced the theme.
Senior saxophonist Colby Kiser called the performance “pretty spectacular” and one of the best of the year. Freshman baritone player Gracyn Gallaway added, “It was freaking amazing. It was stressful too, but I wasn’t worried. Kelly Walsh, we always win.”
Coach and student reflections
Band director Sarah Hanson, fighting back tears during the award ceremony, praised the students not only for their musical skill but for the character they displayed. “We’re so proud of you, not only as musicians and performers, but, more importantly, as humans because what we value most in this band is fortitude and integrity,” Hanson said.
Senior drum major Layne Parks, who has been with the program since his freshman year, said the experience taught him determination, discipline and commitment. “Marching band has really taught me all the life lessons I need to know like determination, discipline and commitment,” Parks explained.
Community support and preparation
The victory was met with enthusiastic cheers from the crowd at the Ford Wyoming Center, followed by tearful congratulations and embraces among the Trojans. The band’s season began with music received in May, followed by intensive rehearsals at band camp in early August—12‑hour days—and continued practice two evenings a week throughout the school year, plus performances at every home football game.
Prior to the state festival, Kelly Walsh already proved its caliber by winning first place at the Fossil Ridge Marching Band Festival in Colorado and at the University of Wyoming’s Troopers Marching Band Invitational.
Looking ahead
Hanson emphasized that the win is about more than trophies. “Teaching my students that the joy of marching band isn’t just how we do it, it’s falling in love with the process of becoming a better person and a better musician through incredibly hard work,” she said. She hopes the program will continue to grow and inspire future students.
The triumph underscores the value of music education in Wyoming schools and offers a proud moment for the Casper community, showcasing the dedication of students, parents and educators who support the arts.
